High Voter Engagement
Repolling operations commenced across 11 polling stations within the Magrahat Paschim Assembly constituency and four stations in Diamond Harbour, both
situated in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. By 5 pm on Saturday, an exceptional voter turnout was observed, with Magrahat Paschim recording 86.11% across its 11 booths and Diamond Harbour achieving an even higher 87.6% from its four booths. Cumulatively, this resulted in an impressive combined turnout of 86.9% for the repolling exercise. The electoral commission maintained strict vigilance, with micro-observers present at each location and the Kolkata Election Commission office actively monitoring the proceedings. This repolling is a crucial step following the earlier phases of the West Bengal Assembly elections, which themselves witnessed a remarkable overall voter participation rate of 92.67% across 142 constituencies. The specific booths involved in Magrahat (Paschim) were numbered 46, 126, 127, 128, 142, 214, 215, 216, 230, 231, and 232, while in Diamond Harbour, the designated booths were 117, 179, 194, and 243. Official polling was slated to conclude at 6 pm, with provisions to extend voting until the last queued voter cast their ballot.
Security and Context
The repolling for the 15 polling booths in South 24 Parganas was conducted under a robust security blanket, ensuring a peaceful and orderly voting environment. Personnel from the Rapid Action Force (RAF) were strategically deployed around the polling stations to preempt any potential disturbances and maintain the integrity of the process. This decision to conduct repolling stemmed from allegations made by BJP's West Bengal co-incharge, Amit Malviya, who claimed that voters were being disenfranchised at multiple polling stations in Falta, under the Diamond Harbour constituency, during the second phase of the state Assembly elections. This situation adds a layer of political contention to the electoral process. In Diamond Harbour, the contest features BJP's Dipak Kumar Halder challenging the incumbent MLA from TMC, Panna Lal Halder, who had previously defeated the BJP candidate by a significant margin of 16,996 votes in the last elections. Similarly, in Magrahat Paschim, TMC's Samim Ahamed Molla is up against BJP's Goursundar Ghosh. This constituency has been a TMC stronghold since its inception in 2011, with Gias Uddin Molla holding the seat.
Election Timeline
The broader electoral landscape for the West Bengal Assembly elections involved two distinct phases of polling. The initial phase took place on April 23, covering 152 assembly constituencies, followed by the second phase on April 29, which encompassed the remaining 142 Assembly constituencies. Both the Diamond Harbour and Magrahat (Paschim) Assembly constituencies were integral parts of this second phase, participating in the voting on April 29. The culmination of this electoral exercise, including the repolling, will be marked by the counting of votes, which was scheduled to take place on Monday, May 4. This structured approach to the elections, with multiple phases and the subsequent repolling where necessary, aims to ensure comprehensive participation and uphold the democratic process in the state.
