Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Satnam Singh Sandhu has initiated a significant push to elevate the status of Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport
in Chandigarh. His primary objective is to have the airport designated as a 'point of call,' a crucial designation that would allow foreign airlines to operate direct flights to and from the facility. This move is specifically aimed at establishing new international routes connecting Chandigarh with key global cities: London, Singapore, and Vancouver. The MP's advocacy stems from the airport's pivotal role as a primary aviation gateway for a vast population spanning Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh, encompassing approximately seven crore individuals. Currently, the airport handles around 40 lakh passengers annually, well within its 60 lakh passenger capacity, indicating ample room for expansion and increased operations. The existing international connectivity is limited to flights to Dubai and Abu Dhabi, operated by IndiGo, underscoring the urgent need for diversification and enhanced global reach.
Boosting Connectivity and Trade
The proposed expansion of international flight services from Chandigarh is not solely about passenger convenience; it's also about bolstering regional economic growth. MP Sandhu emphasized that introducing direct flights to destinations like London, Singapore, and Vancouver would significantly enhance connectivity for business and tourism. Furthermore, he highlighted the necessity of increasing the cargo handling capacity at both Chandigarh and Amritsar international airports. This enhancement is envisioned as a strategic step to invigorate Punjab's export sector. By providing more efficient and direct cargo routes, local industries would gain a competitive edge in international markets, facilitating smoother trade and potentially leading to greater economic prosperity for the state and surrounding regions. The 'point of call' status is a fundamental requirement that needs to be addressed to unlock the full potential of these international flight aspirations.
Infrastructure Growth and Future Outlook
MP Sandhu contextualized his demands within the broader landscape of India's impressive aviation infrastructure development. He noted that the number of airports in the country has more than doubled since 2014, growing from 74 to over 163. Punjab itself now boasts two international airports, Chandigarh and Amritsar, along with four domestic airports, signifying a commitment to inclusive growth and regional balance. Recent developments, such as the renaming of Adampur airport to Sri Guru Ravidas Ji Airport and the inauguration of Halwara airport, reflect a sensitivity to public sentiment and regional development priorities. While acknowledging these advancements, Sandhu conveyed that the aspirations of Punjabis extend further, with a strong desire for increased international flight options from Chandigarh.
