Justice Delivered Swiftly
The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has delivered a landmark verdict, sentencing nine Tamil Nadu police personnel to capital punishment in connection
with the egregious 2020 custodial killings of father and son, Jayaraj and Benniks. This decision, stemming from a swift six-year trial, categorizes the crime as 'rarest of rare,' underscoring the extreme barbarity and profound abuse of authority involved. Judge G Muthukumaran found all nine accused culpable of murder and associated offenses, accepting the prosecution's assertion that the torture was not only deliberate but executed with chilling premeditation over an extended period, justifying the ultimate penalty. The court’s resolute stance sends a powerful message against custodial violence and upholds the pursuit of justice for victims of state-sanctioned brutality. This conviction highlights the critical need for accountability within law enforcement agencies and provides a measure of closure for the aggrieved families, albeit a tragic one.
The Sathankulam Incident
The events leading to this severe judgment began on June 19, 2020, when Jayaraj, a 59-year-old trader, and his 31-year-old son, Benniks, were taken into custody. Their alleged offense was keeping their mobile accessories shop open past the permitted hours, in defiance of COVID-19 lockdown regulations at the time. Upon learning of his father's detention, Benniks voluntarily accompanied the police to the Sathankulam station. Investigations later revealed that the duo endured hours of sustained and brutal torture within the station's confines. The physical abuse inflicted led to severe injuries, including extensive blunt-force trauma and significant bleeding, ultimately proving fatal. This incident ignited widespread public anger and calls for stringent action against the perpetrators, highlighting a grave lapse in the protection of citizens' rights by those sworn to uphold the law. The initial report indicated numerous serious injuries on both victims, a fact corroborated by subsequent postmortem examinations that confirmed blunt force trauma as the cause of death.
Unveiling the Brutality
The sheer ferocity of the torture inflicted upon Jayaraj and Benniks is deeply disturbing. Reports indicate that the assault continued for several hours, with the victims allegedly stripped to heighten the intensity of the beatings. The documented modus operandi described in the chargesheet paints a grim picture: the father and son were forced into positions on a wooden table, their hands and legs held immobile by the accused police officers, rendering them defenseless. They were then subjected to relentless lathi blows on their buttocks, backs, and other parts of their bodies. The severity of the assault was such that their lungis had to be changed multiple times due to the copious amounts of blood. Disturbingly, Jayaraj reportedly pleaded with his tormentors to cease the assault, citing his pre-existing medical conditions, including high blood pressure and diabetes. The grim aftermath saw the victims allegedly compelled to clean their own blood from the station floor, a harrowing testament to the dehumanizing nature of the ordeal.
Evidence Tampering Allegations
Following the horrific assault, the implicated police officers are alleged to have engaged in attempts to destroy crucial evidence related to the crime. A subsequent investigation revealed that a false case was purportedly registered to mask the true nature of events and cover up the brutality. The gravity of the situation intensified as both Jayaraj and Benniks succumbed to their injuries days later, on June 22 and 23, while in custody at the Kovilpatti sub-jail. This tragic outcome fueled further public outcry and demands for accountability. During the investigation, judicial magistrates reported significant reluctance from police officials to hand over critical evidence, such as the lathis used in the assault, with some fabricating excuses and one officer even reportedly fleeing the station. The probe also noted instances where police officials recorded the intimidation of the judicial team on their mobile phones, further complicating the pursuit of truth and justice.
