Over the last 24 to 48 hours, many districts have observed a sharp decline in their daytime temperatures, with some experiencing drops of up to 6°C. Cities like Meerut (-6.7°C), Prayagraj (-6.0°C), Bijnor (-5.8°C), and Etawah (-5.7°C) have recorded notable deviations from their usual seasonal norms, highlighting the widespread nature of this atmospheric anomaly and its immediate effect on daily life across the state.
Meteorological Drivers Identified
Experts at the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) meteorological centre in Lucknow have pinpointed the confluence of several atmospheric systems as the cause for this unusual weather. The primary driver is a potent Western Disturbance situated over North Pakistan and adjacent Afghanistan, manifesting as a cyclonic circulation in the upper atmosphere. This system is actively interacting with induced cyclonic circulations that have formed over Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Furthermore, the system is being fueled by moisture drawn from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. This combination of factors creates an environment of significant atmospheric instability, leading to the current spell of unseasonal rain, thunderstorms, and accompanying weather phenomena.
Upcoming Weather Forecast
The current phase of unseasonal weather is anticipated to persist until April 9. Following a brief dry spell lasting approximately two days, residents can brace for another round of unseasonal rain and thunderstorms starting from April 11 onwards. The IMD has issued a yellow warning that covers more than half of Uttar Pradesh, encompassing over 50 districts. This warning forecasts the possibility of light thunderstorms, accompanied by lightning, gusty winds blowing at speeds of 30-40 kmph, and intermittent light rainfall over the next 24 to 48 hours. Additionally, a specific hailstorm warning has been put in place for around 30 districts, including prominent areas like Lucknow, Gautam Buddha Nagar, and Agra, indicating a heightened risk of severe weather events.
