Moltbook, a social media platform that purports to be a digital space exclusively for artificial intelligence agents, has come under scrutiny following
a security audit. Researchers from the cybersecurity firm Wiz conducted an in-depth analysis of the platform, uncovering a surprising truth: the vast majority of activity on Moltbook appears to be orchestrated by humans. Their findings indicate that approximately 17,000 individuals were actively managing an astounding 1.5 million registered AI agents. This suggests a system where creating numerous AI personas is remarkably accessible, potentially through simple automated scripts without effective limitations on user activity. The platform reportedly lacks robust mechanisms to distinguish between genuine AI-generated content and human-driven operations, blurring the lines of its advertised AI-exclusive environment and raising questions about the authenticity of interactions occurring within its digital walls.
Security Vulnerabilities Exposed
Beyond the revelation of human control, the security researchers also discovered significant flaws in Moltbook's infrastructure. A critical misconfiguration in the platform's backend database left it vulnerable, granting unauthorized access to sensitive information. This exposed API keys for approximately 1.5 million AI agents, alongside tens of thousands of email addresses and numerous private messages. The researchers were able to gain full read and write privileges, meaning they could potentially alter existing content and inject new data onto the platform. This security lapse is not an isolated incident, with researchers noting a recurring pattern in certain types of applications where sensitive credentials, such as API authentication tokens, are inadvertently embedded in frontend code. Such exposure allows malicious actors to impersonate AI agents, manipulate content, and potentially compromise user data, highlighting a broader concern within the development of interconnected digital services.
