Court-Ordered Investigation Unveiled
In a pivotal development, the Madras High Court has officially mandated the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct a thorough inquiry into the procurement
of a substantial quantity of distribution transformers within Tamil Nadu. The court's directive follows serious allegations suggesting substantial financial improprieties occurred during the period spanning 2021 to 2023. These claims point towards a potential loss of Rs 397 crore to the state's treasury. The High Court's bench, comprising Chief Justice S A Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arulmurugan, has ordered the transfer of all pertinent complaints and related documentation to the CBI, emphasizing the need for an immediate and detailed examination of the transformer acquisition process.
Allegations Surface, Petitions Filed
The genesis of this high-profile investigation lies in multiple petitions filed by concerned parties. Notably, the non-governmental organization Arappor Iyakkam initiated proceedings by seeking an inquiry spearheaded by a Special Investigation Team. Concurrently, legal representatives for the AIADMK, E Saravanan and Rajkumar, also submitted petitions, specifically calling for a CBI investigation. Their collective allegations pinpoint potential irregularities amounting to Rs 397 crore in the acquisition of 45,000 transformers. These alleged discrepancies are further scrutinized in the context of Senthil Balaji's tenure as the Minister for Electricity under the previous DMK administration, making the probe a matter of significant political and financial interest.
CBI Takes Charge, DVAC Cooperates
Following the court's explicit order, the CBI is now tasked with initiating a fresh investigation into this complex matter. The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), which was handling initial inquiries, has been formally directed by the judges to transfer all case-related documents to the CBI within a fortnight. This handover is crucial for the central agency to commence its work unhindered. The court has impressed upon the CBI the importance of conducting and concluding this investigation expeditiously, with a clear directive to pursue appropriate legal action based on its findings. Furthermore, the court has underscored the necessity for TANGEDCO, the DVAC, and the Tamil Nadu state government to extend their fullest cooperation and assistance to the CBI throughout the duration of its investigation.
