Cabinet Formation and Portfolios
Following its formation, the new West Bengal cabinet, led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, convened its inaugural meeting. During this session, the portfolios
for the newly sworn-in ministers were formally allocated. Key ministries such as Home, Finance, and Health were retained by the Chief Minister himself. Other significant portfolios were distributed among prominent BJP MLAs: Dilip Ghosh was assigned Panchayat and Rural Development, Agriculture, and Agricultural Marketing. Ashok Kirtania took charge of the Food and Supplies department, while Khudiram Tudu was given the crucial Tribal Development and Backward Class Welfare portfolio. Nisith Pramanik was entrusted with North Bengal Development and Sports and Youth Affairs, and Agnimitra Paul received Urban Development, Municipality Affairs, and Women and Child Welfare portfolios. The cabinet also resolved to assign roles to five ministers, setting the stage for their governmental functions.
National Security and BSF Land Transfer
A significant decision made during the first cabinet meeting was the crucial transfer of land to the Border Security Force (BSF), deemed vital for bolstering national security. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari highlighted that this action was a departure from the previous administration's stance, which he alleged hindered such measures to protect illegal infiltrators. The new government has committed to completing this land handover to the BSF within a stipulated period of 45 days. This move is expected to strengthen border management and enhance the overall security apparatus of the state and the nation, aligning with the Prime Minister's vision of a secure India. The transfer of this land is seen as a proactive step towards ensuring the integrity of the country's borders.
Commitment to Good Governance
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari pledged to usher in an era of 'Susashan' (good governance) and 'Suraksha' (security) for West Bengal following the inaugural cabinet meeting. The government has taken six initial decisions aimed at improving public services and administrative efficiency. Notably, directions have been issued to immediately terminate the tenures of nominated members, directors, and chairpersons across various state government boards, organizations, and public sector undertakings. This directive, approved by the competent authority, also mandates the immediate termination of service for officials serving on re-employment or extension beyond the age of 60. Furthermore, the government has vowed to put an end to 'cut money' practices and curb cow smuggling, signaling a firm stance against corruption and illegal activities within the state.
Public Welfare Schemes and Job Aspirations
Aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'development for all' vision, the new West Bengal government is set to implement various central welfare schemes across the state. Chief Minister Adhikari confirmed that schemes such as Ayushman Bharat, Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma, and Beti Banchao Beti Parao will be brought to Bengal. This initiative promises to extend the benefits of these national programs to the citizens of West Bengal, fostering inclusive growth. In a significant announcement for job seekers, the government has extended the age limit for applications in government jobs by five years, fulfilling a promise made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. This measure is expected to provide greater opportunities for a larger segment of the population aspiring for public sector employment.
Addressing Law and Order Concerns
The newly formed government is prioritizing the restoration of law and order, particularly in light of alleged post-poll violence and the recent murder of Chandranath Rath, the personal secretary to CM Suvendu Adhikari. The Chief Minister is scheduled to hold critical meetings with top police officials, including district police chiefs and CID officers, to address these pressing issues. This focus on security is underscored by the swift action taken in the Chandranath Rath murder case, with three accused arrested from Uttar Pradesh. Investigators utilized digital clues and interstate collaboration to apprehend the suspects, highlighting the government's commitment to swift justice. The arrest and subsequent court presentation of the accused reflect a proactive approach to tackling criminal activities and ensuring accountability.
