Echoes of Youth
The author, a resident of the meticulously planned city of Chandigarh, embarked on an emotionally charged return to his native Kolkata, a city he hadn't
truly revisited since departing in 1960. This wasn't just a physical journey; it was a profound immersion into a past brimming with formative experiences. Walking the familiar streets, he was instantly transported back to his childhood, recalling the iconic trams and yellow taxis, the cultural vibrancy, and the guiding principles of Tagore’s philosophy that shaped his early life. He fondly remembers meeting Mahatma Gandhi and contributing his entire savings to the Harijan Seva Fund, a testament to the values instilled in him. The visit stirred vivid recollections of his birthplace in Birlapur, where his father worked, and his early schooling. Familiar landmarks like St. Xavier’s School, where he first learned English, and his childhood home in Ballygunge, became vivid canvases for cherished memories of his parents' influence, his siblings' camaraderie, and innocent childhood games. These deeply personal recollections brought a powerful emotional response, highlighting how Kolkata's essence remained an intrinsic part of him, irrespective of the geographical distance.
Family's Warmth
Central to this return was the deep-seated warmth of familial connections. The author and his wife stayed with his late brother’s family at their ancestral Alipore residence, a place radiating comfort and love. The presence of his sister-in-law, his niece Veena, her children, and grandchildren created an atmosphere of joyful reunion. A particularly memorable evening saw the extended family convene for dinner at a restaurant managed by Veena’s son, its lively ambiance filled with shared laughter and an outpouring of nostalgic anecdotes. A deeply touching moment was the visit to the home of his late sister Prem, the youngest sibling, who was cherished by everyone. These gatherings underscored the enduring strength and significance of family bonds, offering a profound sense of belonging and continuity that transcended time and distance.
Spiritual Solace
His days in Kolkata were a balanced blend of personal well-being and spiritual rejuvenation. Mornings began with invigorating walks through the serene Botanical Garden, followed by workouts at the esteemed Calcutta Club. While age had gently tempered his physical pace, his spirit remained undimmed, finding renewed strength and self-awareness in these familiar routines. A significant highlight of his spiritual journey was a visit to Belur Math, the revered headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission. This sacred site, intrinsically linked with the spiritual luminaries Sri Ramakrishna, Ma Sarada Devi, and Swami Vivekananda, offered an unparalleled sense of peace and introspection. Engaging with Swami Satyeshanandaji and immersing himself in the tranquil, spiritual aura of the Math transformed the visit into a deeply meaningful pilgrimage, reaffirming his connection to India's rich spiritual heritage.
Enduring Roots
The journey also included reconnecting with long-standing friendships and engaging with esteemed figures. He met with close friends Basant and Sudarshan, bonds forged in school that had weathered the passage of time, evolving into an even deeper affection through shared life experiences, including weddings and periods of adversity. His encounter with Surendralal G. Mehta, President of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, was particularly enriching, owing to Mr. Mehta's profound connection to India's cultural and educational legacy. Ultimately, Kolkata served as a powerful reminder that regardless of where life’s path leads, one's fundamental roots remain firmly anchored. The city, with its intricate layers of history, culture, challenges, and triumphs, represents the very essence of the India that has shaped him. His life's trajectory, spanning from the structured modernity of Chandigarh to the historical depth of Kolkata, illustrates the profound journey of self-discovery and belonging.
