An Unexpected Discovery
In the village of Arattuvazhi, Alappuzha, a family's quest for clean drinking water took an extraordinary turn in 2011. Rethnamma and her family embarked
on digging a borewell, hoping to tap into a reliable water supply. However, after exceeding a depth of 75 feet, their efforts yielded only muddy water, prompting them to seal the well. As the plumber began to close off the pipe, a bystander's accidental lighting of a match ignited a flame erupting from the well's opening. This startling event, while initially causing alarm, presented an unforeseen opportunity that Rethnamma was willing to explore, refusing to let the investment go to waste.
From Hazard to Household Fuel
Following the initial shock and a moment of panic, Rethnamma made the bold decision to connect the borewell's output to her kitchen stove. The family cautiously began by preparing simple items like black coffee, noting the absence of any unusual smell or taste, and no discernible difference in the cooking process. Rethnamma's husband, Rameshan, harbored significant anxieties, fearing potential dangers and picturing the entire village in peril should something go awry. They took precautionary measures, keeping water buckets ready throughout the night. Nevertheless, no adverse incidents occurred, and the plumber, upon reinspection the following day, confirmed the safety of using the gas. Gradually, their apprehension subsided, and the borewell gas became their primary fuel for all culinary needs.
Financial Gains Realized
This remarkable discovery has translated into tangible financial benefits for the family. By exclusively relying on the methane gas drawn from their borewell for cooking, they have achieved substantial savings on their household expenses. Rameshan estimates that this unconventional energy source allows them to save approximately Rs 10,000 annually on their Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) bills. This practical application of a natural resource directly addresses the growing concerns over LPG supply disruptions and escalating costs, offering a sustainable and cost-effective alternative for their daily cooking requirements. The family's ingenuity has turned a common household challenge into a unique cost-saving solution.
Scientific Validation & Legal Clarity
Teams from prominent geological organizations, including the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), investigated the phenomenon. Their findings confirmed that the gas emanating from the borewell was indeed methane. While these assessments did not indicate significant underground gas reserves in the immediate vicinity, they noted the presence of similar gas traces in neighboring borewells. Despite these discoveries, no other household in the area has replicated this family's innovative approach to utilizing the gas. Authorities have clarified that there are no legal impediments to using such naturally occurring gases for domestic cooking. Dr. V Ambily, Deputy Director General of GSI Thiruvananthapuram, explained that regulatory permissions are mandated only for industrial or commercial extraction of gas, distinguishing this household use case.
