Fallen Tree Causes Chaos
An unfortunate sequence of events unfolded on a busy Mumbai road when a large tree toppled, obstructing traffic near Amboli Naka in Andheri West. This
unexpected obstruction caused significant congestion, leading to a halt for several BEST buses. Specifically, three buses were forced to stop in their tracks: route number 266/32 (bus number 7783), route number 242/32 (bus number 7774), and route number 249/33 (bus number 7778). The fallen tree not only brought the traffic to a standstill but also set the stage for a much larger and more serious incident that would soon follow, impacting the daily commute and tragically, a life.
Collision Ignites Pile-up
Amidst the traffic snarl created by the fallen tree, a wet lease BEST bus, operating on route 251 from Andheri station West to Versova, failed to stop in time. This bus collided forcefully with the rear of the three stationary buses, initiating a chain reaction that culminated in a four-bus pile-up. The impact was substantial, and tragically, it was during this chaotic collision that Shekhar Baburao Rawate, a 52-year-old BEST conductor, lost his life. He was caught between two of the buses, sustaining severe injuries that proved fatal. The accident occurred around 1:15 pm, transforming a day of routine commutes into a scene of tragedy.
Conductor's Final Moments
Shekhar Baburao Rawate, who was associated with the first bus in the queue (route 266/32), had reportedly stepped down from his vehicle. He was apparently walking behind the line of halted buses to assess the situation caused by the fallen tree. Tragically, the approaching wet lease bus, upon impact, shoved the stationary buses together, crushing Rawate between bus number 7778 and the oncoming vehicle. Despite immediate efforts by the conductor of the bus to rush him to Cooper Hospital, doctors pronounced him dead shortly after arrival, at approximately 1:35 pm. This devastating incident underscores the vulnerability of individuals present at accident sites, even when attempting to manage the situation.
Aftermath and Investigation
Miraculously, no passengers sustained injuries during this harrowing four-bus pile-up. However, the collision caused significant traffic disruption along the Amboli Naka to Andheri West stretch for an extended period. Emergency services and civic authorities were promptly on the scene to clear the damaged vehicles and remove the fallen tree, eventually restoring normal traffic flow. An investigation into the precise cause of the accident is currently underway. Authorities are expected to thoroughly review CCTV footage and gather statements from bus staff and eyewitnesses to ascertain all details surrounding this fatal incident.
