For instance, one quick-service grocery app shows nearly every induction cooktop model unavailable. On a leading global e-commerce site, only a handful of brands like Kent and Usha have limited availability, while the majority are out of reach for eager buyers. Similarly, another major online retailer presents a similar picture, with Kent models showing some availability but a significant number of other induction cookers unavailable for purchase. This sudden online scarcity is a direct consequence of a sharp uptick in consumer interest and purchasing of these alternative cooking appliances over the past few days.
Retailer Experiences Boom
The surge in demand for induction cooktops isn't confined to online channels; brick-and-mortar retailers are also witnessing an unprecedented rise in customer interest. One prominent electronics retailer, part of a large conglomerate, has reported a threefold increase in demand for induction cooktops recently. This sentiment is echoed by manufacturers of kitchen appliances, with one company experiencing a substantial jump in online sales. Specifically, their weekly sales of induction cooktops on e-commerce platforms have quadrupled since geopolitical tensions in the Middle East escalated. This heightened consumer interest signifies a clear shift towards exploring and adopting alternative cooking methods in response to broader supply chain anxieties.
LPG Anxiety Fuels Demand
The primary driver behind the accelerated demand for induction cooktops appears to be apprehension surrounding the consistent availability of LPG cylinders. Reports from various cities indicate long queues outside LPG distribution centers as individuals eagerly await their cylinder refills. This situation has arisen partly due to governmental adjustments in commercial LPG bookings, with a stated prioritization of domestic supply. Consequently, a growing number of households are actively seeking out alternative cooking solutions. While the government has publicly stated that there is no shortage of domestic LPG cylinders and delivery times are within approximately 2.5 days post-booking, urging the public to remain calm, consumer anxiety seems to be overriding these assurances, pushing them towards immediate practical alternatives.
Government Reassurances
In response to the growing consumer concern and the subsequent spike in demand for alternative cooking appliances, government officials have stepped in to provide reassurance regarding LPG supply stability. A joint secretary from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas emphasized that India's crude oil supply chain remains robust, with a significant portion of its oil sourced from regions unaffected by the Strait of Hormuz. Furthermore, it was highlighted that concerted government efforts have led to a notable increase in LPG production by 25 percent. These statements aim to alleviate public anxiety and prevent unnecessary panic buying or stockpiling, stressing that the domestic LPG supply infrastructure is secure and functioning adequately to meet consumer needs.
