A World-First Innovation
Prepare for an unprecedented travel experience as Air New Zealand introduces the "Skynest," a pioneering concept designed to elevate comfort for economy
class passengers on the world's most extensive flight routes. This innovative system offers dedicated lie-flat sleeping pods, a feature previously exclusive to premium cabins. Initially launching on the demanding Auckland to New York route, one of the longest commercial flights available, the Skynest aims to make journeys lasting up to 17 hours significantly more bearable. The airline's forward-thinking approach addresses the challenges of ultra-long-haul travel, particularly for a nation situated so remotely, by providing a novel solution for rest and rejuvenation during flights.
Skynest Pod Details
Each aircraft will be equipped with a total of six Skynest pods, ingeniously arranged in a stacked bunk configuration to maximize space efficiency. These sleeping sanctuaries will provide essential amenities to facilitate a restful experience, including comfortable bedding, personal lighting, privacy curtains, and curated sleep kits. While designed for comfort, the Skynest operates under specific guidelines to ensure a smooth experience for all users. Passengers will find these pods to be a significant departure from traditional economy seating, offering a private space to truly rest on their long journeys.
Usage Restrictions and Rules
To maintain the integrity and comfort of the Skynest for all travelers, certain restrictions will be in place. Eating is not permitted inside the pods, and sharing the beds for activities like cuddling is also prohibited, emphasizing their sole purpose as individual resting spaces. Furthermore, to ensure a peaceful environment, children are not allowed in the pods. The airline also advises passengers to be mindful of strong perfumes due to the close quarters. Notably, while proximity is close, snoring is not a restricted behavior, and earplugs will be provided to help manage any ambient noise, reflecting a realistic approach to shared sleeping spaces.
Booking and Pricing
The Skynest service will be available as an optional add-on for passengers holding either standard economy or premium economy tickets. The cost for a four-hour slot in these unique sleeping pods is expected to be around NZ$495. Initially, each flight will offer a maximum of two four-hour sessions, and passengers can book a single slot per flight. This pricing structure aims to provide accessible comfort for those undertaking the longest journeys, allowing travelers to break up their travel time with a dedicated period of rest. Bookings are set to open in May, with services anticipated to commence in November.
