Afghanistan's governing Taliban administration has publicly stated its desire to engage in dialogue with Pakistan to find a peaceful resolution to the
escalating conflict. A spokesperson for the Taliban government emphasized their consistent stance, expressing a continued preference for resolving the ongoing issues through diplomatic engagement rather than military confrontation. These remarks follow a period of heightened cross-border tensions and significant military exchanges between the two neighboring nations. The Taliban's appeal for dialogue underscores their stated commitment to avoiding further bloodshed and seeking a path toward stability, despite the recent intensification of hostilities.
Pakistan's Retaliatory Operation
In response to what it described as alleged attacks by Afghan forces on several border posts, Pakistan initiated a significant military operation late Thursday night, codenamed 'Operation Ghazab Lil Haq'. Pakistan's Defence Minister confirmed the operation, asserting that the nation's armed forces were delivering a robust response to what Islamabad termed as aggression. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar provided further details, claiming that the strikes were highly effective, resulting in the deaths of at least 133 Afghan Taliban fighters and injuring over 200. He further elaborated that key Taliban defense targets in Kabul, Paktia, and Kandahar were hit, with 27 posts destroyed and nine others captured, indicating potential for even higher casualties. This operation signifies a firm stance taken by Pakistan in reaction to perceived provocations.
Deepening Tensions and Accusations
The recent military actions have significantly heightened existing tensions between Islamabad and the Taliban-led government in Kabul, primarily concerning border security along the Durand Line. Pakistan has repeatedly voiced concerns that militants are utilizing Afghan territory to launch attacks within its own borders. Adding to the friction, Afghanistan's Ministry of National Defence claimed that 55 Pakistani soldiers were killed in retaliatory operations along the Durand Line on Thursday. They stated these actions were initiated in response to what they described as prior violations of Afghan territory by Pakistani forces. Pakistan has specifically linked the recent surge in militant violence to the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Baloch separatist groups, despite the Afghan Taliban's consistent denial of allowing their territory to be used for attacks against Pakistan. The situation is further complicated by the ideological and social links between the TTP and the Afghan Taliban.
