A Homey Sanctuary
Kritika Kamra envisioned her Mumbai residence as a personal sanctuary, intentionally steering clear of the typical actor's dwelling filled with memorabilia.
Instead, she aimed for a calm, deeply personal space reflecting her life away from the cameras. Collaborating with interior designer Purva Agrawal, the transformation of her rented apartment focused on creating an environment that was both comfortable and authentic. Kritika's desire was for a home that felt like her 'house of the 30s,' a reflection of her current phase in life, emphasizing a lived-in feel over a manufactured set. This approach ensured the space was a true reflection of her personality, a stark contrast to the demanding nature of her professional life, providing an essential escape and a place of genuine belonging.
Designer's Vision
The collaboration between Kritika Kamra and interior designer Purva Agrawal began organically, with Kritika reaching out via Instagram after being impressed by Agrawal's previous makeovers of rental properties. Agrawal, while not initially specializing in rentals, recognized the common desire among tenants with multi-year leases to personalize their living spaces. Kritika's clear brief was to imbue her apartment with a modern, layered feel, distinctly devoid of overt celebrity markers. The overarching design philosophy was to cultivate a relaxed, European cottage aesthetic, characterized by a neutral color palette and adaptable zones suitable for even digital content creation. Agrawal noted that Kritika's personality was already palpable in the apartment's existing decor, making the design process intuitive and focused on refining that inherent warmth and character.
Textiles and Craft
Kritika Kamra's deep appreciation for Indian textiles and artisanal craftsmanship is a defining element of her home. This passion, combined with her hometown's proximity to Chanderi, influenced key design choices, particularly the incorporation of ikat wallpaper in the dining area. Agrawal skillfully integrated Kritika's own handloom brand, Cinnabar, into the decor. A notable feature is a wall display showcasing dyed fabric swatches from Cinnabar's Chanderi collection, thoughtfully complemented by suzani cushions and kilims. The challenge, as Kritika pointed out, was to present these handcrafted items in a way that felt integrated into a home rather than resembling a commercial retail space. This harmonious blend celebrates Indian artistry while maintaining the apartment's overall cozy and personal atmosphere.
Functional Enhancements
The apartment, a three-bedroom unit, comprises Kritika's personal suite, a guest room, and a versatile media room that also serves as a repository for her art collection and a potential shooting space. A significant aspect of the renovation involved optimizing the living area to facilitate easier entertaining. Key functional upgrades included opening up the living space, incorporating ample seating arrangements, and introducing a dedicated bar counter within the kitchen. These changes significantly enhanced the home's capacity to comfortably host friends and social gatherings. Crucially, the majority of these updates were achieved without extensive structural alterations, focusing instead on elements like new cabinet fronts, strategic layout adjustments, and reupholstering existing furniture, mindful of the rental nature of the property.
