The Ghee Remedy Revealed
Harssh Limbachiyaa, known for his presence on his family's YouTube vlog alongside wife Bharti Singh, recently brought attention to a somewhat unconventional
sleep aid. During a late-night segment of their vlog, captured at 2 am, Limbachiyaa demonstrated a home remedy he reportedly uses. He was heard explaining in Hindi that applying two drops of ghee into each nostril is a method believed to promote sound sleep. This practice, shared within the context of his personal routine, sparked curiosity about its validity and efficacy as a sleep-inducing technique, prompting a closer look from a medical perspective.
Expert Opinion on Ghee
Dr. Aniruddha Vasant More, a neurologist at Jupiter Hospital in Thane, shed light on the origins and potential effects of this practice. He explained that applying a small quantity of oil or ghee to the nasal passages is a practice rooted in traditional routines. The primary intention behind this is to maintain nasal moisture, thereby alleviating dryness and soothing irritation, which could indirectly foster a sense of calmness conducive to sleep. However, Dr. More emphasized that there is a distinct lack of robust scientific evidence directly correlating nasal ghee application with improved sleep quality. While it might offer relief from dryness or minor nasal discomfort, making breathing easier at night, and comfortable breathing can contribute to relaxation, these effects are considered secondary and not a direct sleep cure.
Safety and Precautions
Despite the potential for minor relief, Dr. More strongly advises caution when considering this remedy. He highlighted that nasal passages are delicate, and introducing substances like ghee incorrectly carries inherent risks. A significant concern is the potential for aspiration, where the substance might accidentally enter the airway, particularly if an excessive amount is used. Individuals who experience issues with their sinuses, suffer from allergies, or have pre-existing breathing difficulties are strongly advised to avoid attempting this practice without explicit professional guidance to prevent complications.
Effective Sleep Strategies
Dr. More advocates for simpler, more established habits that consistently yield better sleep outcomes. He recommends maintaining a regular sleep schedule, a cornerstone of good sleep hygiene, and consciously reducing exposure to electronic screens in the hours leading up to bedtime. Ensuring the bedroom environment is conducive to rest—meaning it is calm and dark—can also help the body naturally transition into a state of relaxation. For individuals experiencing nasal dryness, Dr. More suggests that safer and more direct alternatives, such as saline nasal sprays, are a preferable choice over home remedies like ghee, which lack scientific backing and carry potential risks.
