Trump's Assessment
During a press interaction after a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Donald Trump commented on India's approach to purchasing Russian oil. He
noted that India had been "very good" in addressing the issue. This statement came amid the backdrop of US efforts to isolate Russia economically, especially concerning energy sanctions. The former President mentioned that while he had not specifically discussed oil with Chinese officials, he hoped that India would align with efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. Trump has made similar remarks since mid-October 2025, suggesting that PM Modi had assured him of reduced Russian crude imports, a crucial revenue source for Russia's operations in Ukraine.
US Energy Interests
The US has long sought to expand its energy procurement strategies. Trump acknowledged the US's ongoing interest in deepening energy cooperation with India. During the press briefing, he highlighted the broader energy issue and how it affected China's procurement of Russian oil. Trump pointed out that this energy acquisition catered to a significant portion of China's needs. The current administration has shown keen interest in bolstering energy partnerships with India, which remains a key area of discussion, underscoring the US's strategic energy interests. Trump's remarks, therefore, reflect a nuanced view of the energy landscape and global diplomacy.
India's Response
In response to the assertions, India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India is a major oil and gas importer. He emphasized that the nation's consistent priority is safeguarding the interests of the Indian consumer in a volatile energy market. India's import policies are meticulously designed to fulfill this objective. The Indian government has continuously striven to ensure stable energy prices and secure supplies, which form the twin goals of its energy policy. Furthermore, India aims to broaden its energy sourcing and diversify as needed to effectively respond to the ever-changing market conditions. This approach ensures its energy security.
