The Amma Canteens, originally established in February 2013 during the tenure of then Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, have a strong legacy. Initially launched in Chennai, the scheme rapidly expanded to cover towns and cities across Tamil Nadu, quickly gaining popularity for its accessibility and value. Even after a change in government in 2021, the scheme's name and core mission were preserved. The current administration, led by Chief Minister Vijay, has demonstrated its commitment by not only continuing the scheme but actively working to improve it.
