The Heist Unfolds
The remarkable theft, described as the largest gold heist in Canadian history, unfolded in April 2023. A flight originating from Zurich, Switzerland, arrived
at Toronto Pearson International Airport on April 17, 2023. The cargo contained almost 400 kilograms of .9999-purity gold, equivalent to approximately 6,600 bars, along with foreign currency valued at roughly $2.5 million. The shipment was unloaded and transported to a holding area within the airport premises. However, within a few hours, the precious cargo went missing, immediately sparking a comprehensive investigation involving multiple agencies both domestically and internationally. This swift response underscores the seriousness with which authorities approached the case and the determination to bring those responsible to justice. The initial loss prompted immediate action and set the stage for a wide-ranging, complex investigation into the intricate details of the crime.
Key Suspects Apprehended
Authorities have made several arrests in connection with the gold heist. Arsalan Chaudhary, aged 43, was taken into custody at Toronto Pearson International Airport after arriving from Dubai, United Arab Emirates. He is now facing charges including theft over $5,000, possession of property obtained through crime, and conspiracy to commit an indictable offense. Additionally, Ammad Chaudhary (43) and Durante King-Mclean (27), both residents of Brampton, have also been apprehended. King-Mclean is currently in custody in the United States, connected to firearm trafficking charges. Archit Grover, also from Brampton, was arrested at Toronto Pearson Airport in May 2024 after his arrival from India. The arrests are a significant step in the investigation, showing the coordinated effort to hold those involved accountable for their actions.
International Pursuit Underway
Simran Preet Panesar, a 33-year-old former Air Canada employee from Brampton, is a key figure suspected of playing a crucial role. Investigators believe Panesar is currently in India. Police allege he was involved in identifying and diverting the cargo by taking advantage of airline systems. The police have issued a Canada-wide arrest warrant against him. Parmpal Sidhu (54), a former Air Canada employee, and Amit Jalota (40), both from Ontario, are also among the suspects arrested. Prasath Paramalingam (36) of Brampton and Ali Raza (37) of Toronto have also been taken into custody. This international dimension highlights the organized and extensive nature of the criminal network responsible for the heist, and the efforts to track down all those involved across borders.
Project 24K's Impact
The investigation, codenamed “Project 24K,” is an ongoing effort that has already led to the laying of charges and the issuing of arrest warrants for ten individuals connected to the theft. Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah has emphasized the force’s commitment to tackling organised and high-value crimes, highlighting how such investigations require coordinated efforts with national and international partners. The case also demonstrates the capabilities of law enforcement to dismantle sophisticated criminal networks, and to leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of justice. The police's actions reflect the determination to send a clear message: those involved in such crimes will be held accountable, no matter where they try to hide.
