Lazare, a charming Papillon dwarf spaniel recognized for his distinctive upright, butterfly-like ears, has passed away at the remarkable age of 30 years
and five months. Born on December 4, 1995, his extraordinary longevity was noted by animal charity worker Anne-Sophie Moyon. While his caretaker was in the process of verifying his age with Guinness World Records, Lazare died peacefully on May 14. At his advanced age, Lazare required nappies, had lost his sight and hearing, and spent most of his time sleeping, yet he retained an endearing and spirited personality that captivated those around him.
A Life's Journey
Lazare's life was marked by deep companionship, spending the majority of his years with a devoted owner until her passing. Following her death, he was placed in the care of a charity shelter. It was there that Ophelie Boudol, a 29-year-old single mother, encountered the elderly canine. Boudol, who was initially searching for a pet for her mother, found herself drawn to Lazare, who was just one year her senior. She ultimately decided to welcome him into her own home, providing him with comfort and affection in his final weeks. Boudol fondly remembered Lazare as their "little grandpa baby" and shared that he took his "final flight" in her arms, reuniting with his beloved mistress.
Record Aspirations
The exceptional age of Lazare prompted his carers to investigate the possibility of him being the world's oldest dog. Anne-Sophie Moyon and her colleagues were so impressed by his age that they believed he might hold such a title. They meticulously confirmed his birth date through two separate registries and even completed the necessary documentation to submit for a potential world record, initially as a lighthearted endeavor. This pursuit came after Bobi, a Portuguese Rafeiro do Alentejo, who reportedly died at 31 in 2023, was previously recognized as the oldest dog. However, Guinness World Records later conducted a review in 2024 and found insufficient evidence to confirm Bobi's age.
