Traffic Advisory Cited
The decision to postpone Munawar Faruqui's stand-up comedy show in Bengaluru was officially announced by the comedian himself. He stated that the event,
originally scheduled for a specific date, had to be moved to the following week. The primary reason given for this change was a traffic advisory issued by local authorities. This advisory was in direct response to an IPL cricket match scheduled at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, which is located in close proximity to the venue where Faruqui's show was to take place. The stadium event was expected to cause significant traffic congestion and impose heavy restrictions in the surrounding areas, making it difficult for attendees to reach the venue.
Surrounding Controversy
This scheduling adjustment comes at a time when Faruqui's performance in Bengaluru had already attracted scrutiny from various organizations. Specifically, a Hindu group, the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, formally approached the Bengaluru City Police Commissioner. Their request was to deny permission for the event, citing potential law and order disturbances. The organization referenced previous incidents involving the comedian, including a 2021 case in Indore where he faced allegations of hurting religious sentiments. He was apprehended in that instance and spent over a month in judicial custody before being granted bail by the Supreme Court. The matter is reportedly still pending legal resolution.
History of Cancellations
The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti also pointed to similar complaints lodged in other cities like Prayagraj and Mumbai concerning Munawar Faruqui's shows. They highlighted a pattern wherein several of his performances in various cities, including Bengaluru itself, as well as Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Hyderabad, Goa, Raipur, and Gurgaon, had previously been either cancelled or denied permission. These actions were attributed to apprehensions of protests and public unrest. The organization expressed its concern that allowing the Bengaluru event to proceed could potentially inflame public sentiment, incite protests, and consequently disrupt communal harmony within the city. They urged authorities to conduct a thorough assessment and consider preventive measures, including outright cancellation, to maintain peace and order.
