Effortless City Commutes
A significant enhancement to public transportation in Shimla has been rolled out with the inauguration of a prepaid taxi service operating from the Tutikandi
Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT). This new initiative, managed by the Taxi Union, introduces a fleet of 115 dedicated vehicles. The service aims to simplify travel for commuters and tourists by providing access to 26 distinct locations within Shimla city. Passengers can now book their rides conveniently from a prepaid taxi counter situated at the ISBT. Upon making their payment at the counter, travelers receive a slip that they must present to the driver. This system is designed to eliminate uncertainties and potential disputes regarding fares, ensuring a smoother journey from the initial booking to the final drop-off at the chosen destination within the city.
Extended Routes
Beyond the confines of Shimla city, this newly launched prepaid taxi service extends its reach to key destinations outside the immediate urban area. The service now includes direct routes to both Chandigarh city and the Chandigarh International Airport. This expansion significantly benefits travelers looking to connect from Shimla to these important hubs. The inclusion of these two major destinations means that passengers can now arrange their onward travel to Chandigarh and its airport with the same ease and transparency as their local Shimla journeys. The process remains consistent: booking and payment at the Tutikandi ISBT counter, receiving a payment slip, and presenting it to the driver for a confirmed journey.
Transparent Fare Structure
The Himachal Pradesh Transport Department has implemented a clear and standardized fare system for this prepaid service, particularly for point-to-point journeys originating from Shimla's ISBT to Chandigarh. These revised fare rates, officially notified under the Himachal Pradesh Pre-Paid Taxi Scheme-2004, aim to provide definitive costs upfront. For travel to Chandigarh city, the fixed fare is Rs 3,000 for a standard taxi and Rs 5,000 for a maxi cab. Journeys to Chandigarh International Airport are priced at Rs 3,500 for a taxi and Rs 5,500 for a maxi cab. This advance payment system ensures that passengers have a clear understanding of their travel expenses before commencing their trip, thereby mitigating any potential for unexpected charges or disagreements with drivers during the journey.
Enhanced Passenger Safety
The introduction of this prepaid taxi service is lauded for its contributions to both passenger safety and overall travel convenience. By establishing predetermined fare rates that are paid in advance at a designated counter, the service effectively removes the possibility of disputes between passengers and drivers concerning charges. This transparency fosters a sense of security for all users, whether they are tourists exploring the region or local residents. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu highlighted that this initiative ensures a transparent travel experience, as the Transport Department has formally notified the fare structure. This measure is expected to significantly boost passenger confidence and provide a more reliable and secure transportation option.
