A Life Transformed
Ratna Bahadur Tamang, originally from a remote village in Nepal, embarked on a quest for a better life, eventually finding himself in the culinary world.
His path took a devastating turn in 2015 during Nepal's severe earthquake. While working as a welder in Kathmandu, he suffered a severe electrical accident that resulted in the loss of both his hands. This life-altering event presented him with stark choices: succumb to despair, or rise above it with unwavering determination. Opting for the latter, Ratna viewed his life as a precious gift and resolved to reclaim his passion for cooking, refusing to let his physical limitations define his future. The path to relearning was arduous, demanding immense patience and innovative adaptation to everyday tasks, especially preparing food. His recovery involved extensive surgeries, leaving him with partial use of his arms, but his spirit remained unbroken, fueling his resolve to cook again.
Finding His Voice
Following the accident, Ratna initially found a way to earn a living by selling clothes. However, his true calling lay in the kitchen, and he began to explore innovative ways to cook without hands. His determination led him to share his culinary journey through social media platforms, where his unique approach and compelling story quickly gained traction. He amassed a significant following, with 137,000 followers on Instagram and 118,000 subscribers on YouTube, demonstrating the power of his perseverance. A pivotal moment in his public recognition came with his appearance on MasterChef India Season 10 in January 2026. The experience was profoundly moving, particularly when renowned chef Ranveer Brar not only presented him with a signed knife but also offered a gesture of solidarity by holding his arms. This simple yet powerful act resonated deeply with Ratna, marking an unforgettable milestone in his career and validating his talent and resilience.
A Mission of Service
Ratna Bahadur Tamang's ambition extends far beyond personal achievement; he is driven by a profound desire to uplift and empower others facing adversity. He is actively working to establish the 'Ratna Tamang Kitchen Studio,' a holistic space designed to transform struggle into service through the medium of cooking. Through crowdfunding and his online cooking classes, he aims to provide a platform for individuals with similar challenges, encouraging them to pursue their dreams. His philosophy is simple yet powerful: "If I can cook without hands, you can do whatever you dream." Beyond empowerment, he is committed to community welfare, planning to organize feeding programs that will provide freshly prepared meals to hospital patients' families and those in need across Kathmandu. He also envisions collaborating with existing culinary institutions and educational initiatives, both within Nepal and internationally, to broaden his impact and open doors for those who might otherwise face significant barriers to entry in the culinary world.
