The Charm of Nicknames
The world of horology, beyond its intricate mechanics, harbors a charming quirk: the affectionate habit of bestowing nicknames upon specific watch models.
This practice, deeply ingrained in watch fandom, sets apart the dedicated enthusiast. While some names are straightforward abbreviations, like 'Speedy' for the Omega Speedmaster, others are far more evocative, often tied to significant historical moments or cultural touchstones. For instance, a particular Speedmaster reference, known as the 'Ed White', gains immense value and desirability due to its association with the astronaut who wore it during a historic spacewalk in 1964. This connection to a pioneering space mission elevates the watch from a mere instrument to a piece of history, significantly impacting its market appeal. The most celebrated nickname for the Speedmaster line, 'Moonwatch', directly commemorates the 1969 Apollo 11 mission, cementing its legendary status in the annals of timekeeping and human achievement.
Rolex's Iconic Monikers
Two of the most globally recognized watch manufacturers, Rolex and Seiko, are renowned for inspiring a wealth of affectionate shorthand names, particularly for their robust sports watches such as divers, chronographs, and GMTs. Rolex's Submariner collection boasts several memorable nicknames, with the ref. 106610LV, launched in 2010, famously earning the moniker 'Hulk' due to its striking all-green aesthetic, encompassing both the dial and the rotating bezel. Building on this theme, other Submariner variations have emerged: the 'Kermit' features a green bezel paired with a black dial, while the 'Smurf' is a white gold model distinguished by a vibrant blue bezel. The 'Batman', a GMT-Master II, is named for its distinctive blue and black bezel, mirroring the DC Comics hero's costume. A subtle, yet debated, variation on this is the 'Batgirl', applied to the same watch when featured on a Jubilee bracelet. A more whimsical example is the 'Root Beer', a nickname for a two-tone GMT-Master II with a brown dial and a brown-and-gold bezel. However, some of Rolex's most enduring nicknames have more grounded origins. The original GMT-Master with a red and blue bezel is universally known as the 'Pepsi', a name so intuitive that it now applies to any watch with a similar bezel color scheme. Perhaps the most coveted vintage Rolex nickname belongs to the Daytona chronograph, dubbed the 'Paul Newman' after a photograph emerged of the renowned actor sporting one in the 1970s, transforming it into a highly sought-after collector's item.
Seiko's Cult Following
Shifting focus to Seiko, a brand that commands immense respect and an equally rich tapestry of nicknames, particularly within its diver watch lines, despite being at a different price point than Rolex. Many of Seiko's most celebrated monikers draw inspiration from cinematic triumphs. The 'Captain Willard' is a direct homage to the iconic Seiko diver, ref. 6105-8110, featured in Francis Ford Coppola's Vietnam War epic, _Apocalypse Now_. This watch choice was historically accurate, as Seiko divers were commonly worn by US soldiers during that era. Equally famous is the 'Arnie', referencing Arnold Schwarzenegger's role in the 1987 action film _Predator_. The robust, ana-digi diver watch, ref. H558-5009, worn by Schwarzenegger's character, has since been reissued by the brand, unofficially carrying its legendary nickname. Beyond Hollywood, Seiko's professional diver watches also boast distinctive names. The 'Turtle', characterized by its cushion-shaped case and crown positioned at four o'clock, has been a staple since the late 1960s. The nickname truly solidified with the 1976 ref. 6306-7000/1 and continues to influence modern Seiko diver designs. Lastly, the 'Tuna' or 'Tuna Can' refers to the colossal ref. 6159-7010, a groundbreaking timepiece designed for extreme saturation diving, boasting a remarkable 600m water resistance, a massive 51mm titanium monocoque case, and a protective ceramic shroud, all contributing to its distinctive can-like appearance.
