Kolhapur Echoes at Home
Sagarika Ghatge envisioned her Mumbai dwelling as a heartfelt extension of her childhood home in Kolhapur, infusing it with a tangible sense of familiarity
and warmth. This deliberate design choice is evident in the meticulous selection of elements such as rich teak wood doors, handcrafted cabinetry, and charming floral upholstery that echo the aesthetic of her upbringing. Sagarika herself shared that when embarking on the design of their Mumbai abode, her primary goal was to carry forward the comforting essence of her Kolhapur home. She articulated that for them, a home is not an instant creation but a gradual evolution, a space where they accumulate items over time, often from their travels, that resonate with the environment and feel just right. This philosophy underscores their belief that a home is ultimately an accumulation of cherished memories and objects that possess a personal significance, rather than adhering to rigid design dictates.
Curated Collection Over Time
Instead of rushing the interior design process, Zaheer Khan and Sagarika Ghatge opted for a more organic and deliberate approach. They chose to gradually build their home's character by collecting furniture, art, and decorative pieces during their journeys and bringing them into the space only when they felt a genuine connection and suitability. This unhurried method has resulted in interiors that feel rich with layers, possess a lived-in quality, and distinctly reflect the couple's personal journey and tastes. The living areas, for instance, are a vibrant display of varied textures and colors, highlighted by a striking deep green velvet sofa that serves as a focal point. This luxurious piece is complemented by a thoughtful arrangement of patterned cushions and accent chairs, all set against the backdrop of traditional Persian rugs, which collectively soften the overall ambiance and contribute to a welcoming, eclectic feel.
Family-Centric Design
The couple has thoughtfully integrated elements that cater to their growing family and lifestyle. One notable area features serene teal blue walls, leading into a captivating floor-to-ceiling memory wall adorned with framed photographs that chronicle significant personal milestones. This space is elegantly delineated by classic glass-panelled teak doors. While the interiors are graced with sophisticated touches like crystal chandeliers and elegant silver vases, the paramount emphasis remains on comfort and practicality. Everyday items, such as a baby stroller casually placed within the living areas, exemplify a home that is truly lived in and built for family life, rather than solely for aesthetic display. Furthermore, a beautiful, dedicated temple space within their home adds a spiritual dimension to their personal sanctuary.
Restful Retreats
Functionality has become increasingly paramount in their home, especially with the presence of a young child and two pet dogs, influencing design choices to accommodate their active household. The master bedroom offers a tranquil escape, characterized by a softer, more subdued color palette. This restful sanctuary features a distinguished four-poster teak bed, elegantly draped with sheer fabrics, and is adorned with floral-patterned headboards that add a touch of classic charm. Complementing the bed is curated bird-themed artwork, further enhancing the serene atmosphere. This thoughtfully designed space is intended to provide a calm and restorative environment for Zaheer, Sagarika, and their son, Fatehsinh Khan, ensuring their personal quarters are a true haven of peace and relaxation amidst their busy lives.
