The Buddymoon Arrives
The conventional wisdom for newlyweds has long been a secluded honeymoon, a private escape for just the couple. However, following the immense, often overwhelming,
celebrations of a large Indian wedding, the shift to complete solitude can feel abrupt. Rashmika Mandanna and Vijay Deverakonda recently embraced a novel approach, opting for a 'buddymoon' in Koh Samui, Thailand. This innovative travel style involves celebrating the post-wedding bliss not in isolation, but surrounded by their closest friends, transforming the traditional honeymoon into a collective experience of joy and relaxation.
A Grand Villa Retreat
Instead of opting for typical hotel accommodations, the couple and their entourage booked Villa Koh Koon, an expansive clifftop estate in Thailand. This property, described as resembling a Mediterranean farmhouse set against a tropical backdrop, offered ample space for connection. Priced at approximately Rs 2.35 lakh per night, it represented a significant investment, but one focused on fostering group interaction rather than mere lodging. The villa boasted impressive features such as soaring ceilings, sun-drenched living areas, and a substantial 22-seater dining table crafted from driftwood. With an infinity pool overlooking Chaweng Bay and on-site pizza ovens, the atmosphere was decidedly more akin to an elaborate house party than a formal holiday, encouraging spontaneous activities like playing foosball or darts at any hour without concern.
Authentic Couple Moments
What lends a genuine feel to this trip is the candid way Rashmika and Vijay interact. Their shared videos capture unscripted moments of everyday happiness, from shared laughter over breakfast to spontaneous dances with messy hair and late-night movie sessions. Rashmika has spoken about the ongoing adjustment to referring to Vijay as 'my husband,' but consistently emphasizes his role as her best friend. Vijay, in turn, appreciates her ability to transform any space into a home simply by her presence. This highlights that even amidst fame, the most cherished aspects of a relationship often lie in the simple joys: playful debates about who excels at table tennis or planning future adventures together.
Why Buddymoons Shine
The rise of the 'buddymoon' trend is largely a reflection of Gen Z and Millennial values, recognizing the profound importance of friendships alongside romantic partnerships. One key benefit is decompression; transitioning from an event with potentially hundreds of guests to complete solitude can be overwhelming. Having a close-knit group of friends present maintains a positive, energetic atmosphere and helps ward off post-wedding blues. Furthermore, this trend acknowledges a shift away from the idea that a partner must fulfill every social and emotional need. Inviting friends along honors the support network that was instrumental in reaching the altar. Practically, sharing the cost of a luxurious villa among a group of friends can make high-end accommodations significantly more affordable, democratizing access to opulent travel experiences.
