Documenting Hidden Gems
For World Heritage Week 2026, the Uttar Pradesh Tourism department has rolled out two inclusive programs designed to involve the public directly in heritage
preservation and celebration. The first, 'UP Heritage Through My Lens,' calls upon individuals to capture lesser-known or overlooked heritage sites. This could involve anything from ancient stepwells and traditional bustling market streets to local temples and smaller forts that hold significant cultural value but might not be widely recognized. Participants are encouraged to use readily available tools like smartphone cameras to create photographs or short video reels. The focus isn't just on grand architecture but also on the vibrant rituals and the daily life that unfolds around these historical locations, making heritage accessible and engaging for a broad audience. The Tourism and Culture Minister highlighted that this effort aims to connect people, especially younger generations, with their roots and instill a sense of pride in their local heritage, moving beyond just famous monuments to embrace the broader cultural tapestry.
Sharing Personal Legacies
Running concurrently with the visual documentation campaign is ‘Share Your Personal Treasure,’ a unique initiative that invites participants to showcase tangible objects of deep personal or familial importance. This program encourages individuals to submit items such as antique coins, cherished handwritten letters passed down through generations, traditional family jewelry, heirloom kitchenware, or vintage photographs that have been carefully preserved within households. By sharing these personal artifacts, participants can illuminate the deeply personal and relatable stories that form a crucial part of our heritage. This campaign is particularly resonant for families and older individuals, offering a platform to connect with history through intimate belongings. Together, these two campaigns collectively broaden the understanding of what constitutes heritage, extending its definition beyond well-established landmarks to encompass localized histories and individual narratives.
Participatory Tourism Forward
The launch of these citizen-centric campaigns signifies a significant step towards a more participatory model of tourism in Uttar Pradesh. As noted by the Additional Chief Secretary of Tourism, Culture, and Religious Affairs, these initiatives empower citizens to actively contribute to the documentation and presentation of the state’s rich heritage. This active involvement not only helps in identifying culturally significant places and traditions that resonate strongly with local communities but also provides valuable insights. These insights can potentially be integrated into the broader tourism strategies of the state, showcasing the diverse and deeply personal heritage that Uttar Pradesh possesses. The ultimate goal is to foster a deeper connection between the people and their history, making heritage a living and shared experience.
How to Join In
Engaging with these exciting World Heritage Week campaigns is straightforward. Participants are invited to submit their entries in the form of photographs or short videos, adhering to specific guidelines to ensure the authenticity and quality of submissions. For the ‘Share Your Personal Treasure’ category, each submission must be accompanied by a concise written narrative detailing the significance of the object. The most outstanding entries will be eligible for special prizes, and selected submissions from the ‘Personal Treasure’ category will be given the honor of being displayed at the State Museum. Furthermore, these selected entries will receive recognition at a statewide event. The deadline for all submissions is April 18, 2026, with interested individuals able to register and find more details on the official website of Uttar Pradesh Tourism.
