Arora's vision for 'The Wanderer' draws inspiration from the concept of a contemporary traveler, someone who is perpetually in motion, adept at adjusting to diverse surroundings and eager to embrace new experiences. The garments are intentionally designed for layering and creative pairing, empowering individuals to curate a personal style that flows smoothly from the day's commitments into the evening's relaxation, and from professional settings into leisure activities. Moving away from the conventional dark hues often associated with colder months, Arora opted for a striking departure. 'Every season starts with a very basic thought,' she shared. 'Sometimes it's as straightforward as observing that everyone opts for black in winter and deciding to present pink instead. This time, we aimed to surprise everyone by embracing a palette entirely devoid of color variation, focusing exclusively on blue and white.' This deliberate choice represents a significant shift for a brand that has frequently incorporated rich, vibrant winter palettes in its past designs. Concentrating on just these two colors feels intentional and offers a sense of invigorating newness. This foundational idea then began to blossom as the team delved into textiles that had been in development for almost two years. Péro's creative process consistently prioritizes fabric exploration first, with the narrative unfolding afterward. 'As we started observing a prevalence of pinstripes and various stripe patterns in materials like mashru, it naturally evoked an office-like ambiance,' Arora explained. 'Concurrently, some of our more pronounced stripes brought to mind the patterns seen along the French Riviera, reminiscent of seaside locales.' The fascinating contrast that emerged from these observations illuminated a story centered on transition—a liminal space between work and escape. The collection visually represents the sensation of being present in the office while simultaneously dreaming of a vacation, or perhaps in the reflective phase after returning from one.
Instinctive Design Philosophy
An intriguing aspect of Arora's approach to fashion design is its divergence from the prevalent trend forecasting and market prediction methods employed by many brands today. 'We do not engage in trend forecasting at all. Everything we create is driven by instinct,' she stated. 'In fact, I often find myself saying that we aren't following trends; we are actually the ones inspiring them.' This unique perspective resonates profoundly when one observes the organic manner in which the collections take shape. 'Our core strength lies within our meticulous process, which is exceptionally rigorous and unfolds sequentially. When we initiate work on textiles two years in advance, there isn't a pre-determined story or theme in place. These elements only begin to develop much later, once the materials themselves start to coalesce and reveal their potential.' On the runway, this captivating fusion of office aesthetics and vacation vibes is communicated not through literal interpretations but rather through mood and styling. Arora likens it to the natural cadence of a typical workday. 'The presentation reflects the progression of a standard workday, encompassing the morning rush, the post-lunch period of lower energy, and finally, the growing anticipation for the day's conclusion.' Underlying this structured routine is the subtle yet persistent theme of stepping away from it all, a yearning for respite. 'There's an inherent notion of escape, of daydreaming about being away from the confines of the office,' she elaborated. The styling subtly incorporates these undertones; for instance, winter caps make an appearance, subtly referencing skiing excursions or the majestic Swiss Alps. Even the initial looks, designed to embody the morning office atmosphere, are styled with an unexpected touch of whimsy. 'Our styling philosophy is almost childlike,' Arora shared. 'It's intuitive, not overly planned or analyzed. We aim to help people rediscover that sense of liberation and imagination that we all possessed as children.'
Textile Narratives & Embellishments
As is characteristic of Péro's collections, textiles form the absolute core of this latest offering. The constraint of working solely within blue and white led the design team to explore a rich tapestry of references that traverse different cultures and historical periods. Chinese porcelain, Delft pottery, and the classic French Toile de Jouy pattern emerged as significant visual starting points for the collection. 'Our prints are directly inspired by Toile de Jouy,' Arora revealed. 'Traditionally a textile that tells a story, we've reimagined it by incorporating floral motifs. From a distance, it retains the appearance of Toile, but upon closer inspection, it reveals itself to be purely floral.' The surface details further elaborate on this visual language. Embellishments feature glass beads and stones meticulously chosen to echo the tones found in blue pottery. Notably, some of these adornments are rendered in a half-blue and half-white finish, creating an intriguing textural effect when viewed up close. Adding another layer of material innovation, the collection introduces a distinctive hand-knitted wool technique that artfully mimics the visual and textural qualities of fur. 'This is not faux fur; it's entirely 100% wool, knitted by hand, yet it achieves the same visual impact,' Arora emphasized. Complementing these are robust tweeds and intricately woven fabrics sourced from regions such as Himachal and Punjab. Stripes play a pivotal role throughout the collection, manifesting in various forms from delicate pinstripes to bolder, Riviera-style patterns. These stripes are interpreted across a spectrum of textiles originating from diverse parts of India, including Gujarat, West Bengal, and the southern regions, often rendered on luxurious silk. The collection seamlessly navigates between these diverse design elements, harmoniously uniting references to workwear with the vibrant energy of holiday attire within a unified aesthetic space.
