The Groundbreaking Dream
Kesav Suneesh, a tenacious 21-year-old from Kerala's Alappuzha district, embarked on a journey that defied financial limitations to reach the awe-inspiring
Everest Base Camp. While the complete expedition to the summit, estimated at a staggering ₹50 lakh, remained beyond his current means, Kesav strategically reframed his ambition. He set his sights on the achievable milestone of Everest Base Camp, standing at an impressive 5,364 meters. His remarkable feat is amplified by his ordinary background; he diligently saved earnings from his work at a local vegetable shop and as a food delivery agent. The approximately ₹35,000 accumulated over months of labor, supplemented by his delivery income, formed the financial bedrock for his Himalayan endeavor. This expedition was a testament not to inherited wealth, but to the power of persistent effort and an unyielding spirit.
The Arduous Path
Kesav's expedition was far from a pre-packaged tourist experience; it was a true test of endurance and resourcefulness. To meticulously manage expenses, he opted for economical travel, utilizing second-class train tickets and buses for his journey towards Nepal. His entry point into Nepal was the Sonauli border, from where he continued his journey to Salleri, initiating the trek on foot. The mountains then presented their formidable challenges, demanding physical and mental fortitude. Over an intense eight-day period, Kesav covered more than 132 kilometers, navigating through villages like Paiya, Tengboche, Dingboche, and Lobuche, eventually reaching Gorakshep, the staging area for Everest Base Camp. His commitment to budget travel extended to carrying his own tent, finding rudimentary sleeping spots, and preparing his own meals. In a world where many aspirations remain unfulfilled, Kesav's dream was rigorously tested by the unforgiving realities of distance, adverse weather, and sheer exhaustion, underscoring a profound commitment to his goal.
Resilience Forged Early
Kesav attributes his remarkable stamina and mental fortitude to experiences cultivated long before his trek to the Himalayas. His formative years spent as part of the Scouts and Guides movement at NRPM HSS in Kayamkulam, followed by his involvement in the National Cadet Corps (NCC) during his college studies, played a pivotal role in honing his physical and psychological resilience. These foundational experiences, while not making the Everest ascent effortless, instilled in him the crucial discipline and mental toughness required to persevere when the trails became steep and the air grew thin. His journey also highlights a particular brand of ambition that thrives in challenging environments—one that is practical, patient, and deeply integrated with routine rather than grand gestures. Kesav exemplified this by actively working, saving diligently, traveling frugally, and consistently moving forward without waiting for ideal circumstances.
A Promising Horizon
Reaching Everest Base Camp was not merely an endpoint for Kesav Suneesh, but a significant stepping stone towards a grander aspiration. Standing at the base of the world's highest peak offered him a tangible glimpse of a dream he is determined to fulfill one day: reaching the summit. He acknowledges that this ultimate goal presents an entirely different and significantly greater challenge, necessitating advanced mountaineering equipment, expert guidance, and extensive preparation. Nevertheless, Kesav speaks with a forward-looking perspective, signaling his firm intention to return. His immediate plans include completing his academic pursuits, securing stable employment, and diligently saving the necessary funds for the ultimate climb. For now, the mountain has bestowed upon him something invaluable: irrefutable proof that the initial step, however small or challenging, carries immense significance, especially when the final destination remains distant. At just 21 years old, Kesav has already achieved what many only contemplate, demonstrating that extraordinary aspirations can indeed be ignited and nurtured within the ordinary confines of everyday work.
