Pioneering 6G Standards
India has embarked on a strategic journey to transition from 5G to 6G, a proactive move announced by Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. This
process is deeply intertwined with global technological standards and interoperability, being shaped within prestigious international bodies like the International Telecommunications Union and the 3rd Generation Partnership Project. These organizations are crucial in defining the benchmarks for future communication technologies. While the full rollout of 6G standards is anticipated around 2030, India is currently in the crucial ideation phase. This marks a profound departure from previous generations of mobile technology; unlike its limited involvement in 3G and 4G standard-setting, India made its initial significant contribution to global telecom standards with a proposal for ubiquitous connectivity during the 5G era. This current engagement signifies a much more integrated and influential position for India in the global technological discourse.
Bharat 6G Alliance
The narrative surrounding India's involvement in 6G is significantly bolstered by the establishment of the Bharat 6G Alliance in 2024. This alliance was conceptualized to align with Prime Minister Modi's vision, initiated even before the widespread deployment of 5G post-Covid. Initially comprising 14 dedicated members, the alliance has experienced substantial growth, now encompassing 85 active participants. This expansion highlights the growing collective interest and commitment within India towards advancing 6G capabilities. By actively participating in global standard-setting forums for 6G, India has secured a seat at the 'round table,' a pivotal moment in the history of independent India. This involvement is unprecedented, placing the nation at the forefront of shaping the telecommunications technology that will define the future of global connectivity and digital infrastructure for decades to come, moving beyond merely adopting technology to actively influencing its direction.
