Competition Launch & Winners
The Fabricant recently celebrated the culmination of its inaugural international competition, Design Forward 2026, dedicated to emerging designers utilizing
artificial intelligence in fashion. This groundbreaking event saw an international panel of judges meticulously evaluate submissions from a pool of 15 finalists, ultimately selecting ten outstanding individuals to be recognized for their innovative approaches. The competition's debut edition marked a significant moment in the fashion industry, showcasing the burgeoning talent pool at the intersection of creativity and cutting-edge technology. The selection process was rigorous, emphasizing originality, technical skill, and the effective integration of AI as a tool to enhance design concepts rather than replace the designer's vision. This initiative aims to democratize access to advanced design tools, empowering a global community of creators.
Top Honors Awarded
Taking the coveted first prize was Tiia Jaakkola from Denmark's Kolding School of Design with her remarkable collection, 'Reborn Myths.' This winning design masterfully harmonizes discarded post-consumer denim with traditional Finnish folklore, reimagined through a contemporary streetwear lens. This fusion of sustainability, cultural heritage, and modern aesthetics deeply impressed the jury. Securing the second position was Akriti Awatwani from Italy's Instituto Marangoni for her work titled 'Invisible Architecture.' Rounding out the top three, Andre Fonseca Vieira, representing the University of Lisbon, earned third place with his collection, 'Streetwear Preppy.' These accolades underscore the diverse and innovative directions emerging designers are exploring with AI.
Prizes & Recognition
The grand prize winner of Design Forward 2026 receives a significant package of professional development opportunities, including six months of complimentary access to The Fabricant's advanced platform, a valuable resource for digital fashion creation. Furthermore, the winner will be featured in an interview on the Digital Weave videocast and receive prominent mentions across the company's social media channels, alongside a formal certificate of participation. The designers who secured second and third place are also rewarded with substantial platform access, with three months for the runner-up and one month for the third-place recipient. Beyond the podium, all ten finalists will be awarded 150 credits for The Fabricant's platform, enabling them to further explore and develop their digital design capabilities.
Global Participation & AI's Role
The competition garnered widespread international interest, with designers hailing from 21 different countries and representing 45 design institutions globally. Finalists emerged from a diverse geographical spread, including nations such as Denmark, Italy, Portugal, the Netherlands, Brazil, India, and Malaysia, underscoring the truly global nature of this design movement. A central theme throughout the judging process was the multifaceted role of AI in design. Judges deliberated on whether technology's primary function is to generate entirely novel ideas or to serve as an enhancer for existing concepts. The consensus highlighted that the most compelling submissions were those where the designer's distinct artistic voice remained prominent, with AI functioning as a sophisticated co-pilot rather than the sole architect of the creation.
Jury Insights
The esteemed panel of judges for Design Forward 2026 comprised influential figures from various sectors of the fashion and media industries, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of the submitted works. Representatives from The Fabricant, the competition's organizer, were joined by experts from prominent organizations including Vice Media, Bestseller, Fashion for Good, and the renowned design house Vivienne Westwood. FashionUnited also contributed its industry perspective to the jury. This diverse assembly of judges brought a wealth of experience and varied viewpoints, critically assessing the technical execution, conceptual originality, and the successful integration of AI tools within each designer's unique aesthetic vision. Their collective expertise was instrumental in identifying and celebrating the future leaders of digital fashion.
