A Glimpse of the Past
Kanak Agrawal, a distinguished alumna of IIT Kanpur, once navigated the demanding landscape of McKinsey & Company in Gurgaon. Her professional trajectory
included a significant stint co-founding a startup, an endeavor she dedicated five years to building. Despite these achievements, a persistent feeling of misalignment characterized her experience. Reflecting on her formative years, Kanak recalled the intense academic pressure surrounding IIT admissions in her hometown near Kota, where the pursuit of an IIT seat was all-encompassing. Her own path to IIT was influenced by her brother's success, leading her to perceive it less as a personal choice and more as a predetermined route. This early conditioning, coupled with external influences, shaped her initial career decisions, including joining McKinsey directly from campus and subsequently co-founding a startup with friends. Although these ventures were outwardly successful, they ultimately failed to provide the deep sense of satisfaction she craved, prompting a significant re-evaluation of her life's direction at the age of 31.
Embracing a New Rhythm
Kanak Agrawal has since relocated to the picturesque hills of Himachal Pradesh, where her daily existence has undergone a profound transformation. The frenetic pace and perpetual anxiety characteristic of her corporate and startup life have been replaced by a more measured and intentional rhythm. Her mornings now commence with a sense of calm, a stark contrast to the rushed and often stressful beginnings of her previous professional life. She dedicates time to mindful practices like sipping hot water and journaling for extended periods, typically 30 to 40 minutes. Her day is further enriched by the preparation of fresh, home-cooked meals and the integration of personal interests and moments of rest. This newfound flexibility allows her to curate her experiences without the need for external validation or permission to prioritize her well-being. The ability to 'not have to wait for permission to live' has become a cornerstone of her liberated lifestyle, enabling a profound sense of autonomy and peace.
Contentment Over Capital
While Kanak Agrawal's current income is considerably less than what she commanded during her corporate tenure, she reports a deep sense of contentment. Her new professional pursuits include crafting travel content and offering ghostwriting services, complemented by organizing intimate, slow-living retreats. This shift allows her to combine her passions with her livelihood. For the past four years, she has been actively exploring India and venturing abroad, weaving these experiences into her work. The financial rewards are not as substantial as her previous roles, but the intrinsic value she derives from her chosen path far outweighs the monetary differences. The overarching feeling of agency and ownership over her life is what truly defines her happiness. This sense of 'mine' fuels her satisfaction, creating a life that is not only sustainable but also deeply resonant with her personal values and aspirations.
Navigating Parental Doubts
Kanak Agrawal's significant career shifts elicited considerable surprise from her parents, first with her departure from McKinsey and again upon her decision to leave the startup. She chose to communicate these changes after they had been finalized, a decision that led to initial confusion and a lack of understanding from her parents. They consistently emphasized the importance of stability and settling into conventional life paths. This divergence in perspectives created a communication gap, with her parents struggling to comprehend her desire for a less conventional lifestyle. Despite their reservations and ongoing attempts to steer her towards a more traditional route, they have ultimately respected her choices and allowed her the space to live life as she sees fit. This parental acceptance, while perhaps born of a desire for peace, marks a significant step in her journey towards self-determination.
The Strength of Independence
The independent nature of Kanak Agrawal's current work presents its own set of challenges, particularly the absence of the structured support systems and safety nets typically found in traditional employment. She candidly admits that navigating this solo professional landscape demands significant mental fortitude. However, this very independence fosters substantial personal growth. She articulates that being solely responsible for every facet of her life, from her geographical location to her professional endeavors, forces a level of self-reliance and maturity that would be difficult to attain otherwise. The inherent uncertainty, once a source of anxiety, has now become a deliberate choice, and it is this conscious ownership of her path, even with its unpredictable elements, that has fundamentally transformed her perspective and instilled a profound sense of fulfillment.
