Gently massage the shampoo into your scalp, focusing on cleansing the roots, and allow the lather to rinse down the lengths of your hair without vigorous scrubbing. This minimises friction and prevents colour loss. Always rinse thoroughly to ensure no product residue remains, which can also dull your colour over time. Additionally, explore co-washing, a technique where you use conditioner instead of shampoo to cleanse your hair, which is incredibly gentle and helps preserve moisture and colour.
Deep Conditioning Power
Colouring can leave hair feeling dry and brittle, making deep conditioning an indispensable part of your routine. Aim to use a deep conditioner or hair mask at least once a week. Look for products rich in moisturizing ingredients like shea butter, argan oil, coconut oil, or keratin. These ingredients work to replenish lost moisture, repair damage to the hair shaft, and improve elasticity. Apply the conditioner generously from mid-lengths to ends, avoiding the scalp to prevent greasiness. For enhanced penetration, wrap your hair in a warm towel or use a shower cap while the conditioner sits for the recommended time, typically 15-30 minutes. Some individuals even opt for overnight deep conditioning treatments. Protection from Damage
Protecting your coloured hair from environmental stressors and heat is crucial for maintaining its longevity and shine. Before styling with heat tools like blow dryers, straighteners, or curling irons, always apply a heat protectant spray. These products create a barrier around the hair shaft, minimising damage and preventing excessive moisture loss. When spending time outdoors, especially in direct sunlight, consider wearing a hat or using hair products that offer UV protection. UV rays can break down hair colour pigments, leading to fading and brassiness. Another significant factor is friction; avoid rubbing your hair vigorously with a towel. Instead, gently squeeze out excess water and opt for a microfiber towel or an old cotton t-shirt for blotting. Even sleeping can cause damage; consider using a silk pillowcase to reduce friction and prevent tangles and breakage overnight.
