Generational Harmony
The Alaghs' Delhi abode is more than just a house; it's a vibrant ecosystem housing four distinct generations, a testament to their belief that a home's
true value lies in its lived-in authenticity rather than pristine perfection. This shared living arrangement, encompassing grandparents, parents, and the couple's two young children, fosters a unique sense of togetherness. Ghazal Alagh emphasizes that the house is a genuine home, replete with the endearing imperfections like occasional scuff marks or children's artwork adorning walls, which only serve to deepen its emotional significance. This particular property holds immense sentimental value as it was their very first home together after years of nomadic living in rented accommodations across various cities while building their entrepreneurial careers. Varun Alagh highlights their deliberate approach to creating this space, emphasizing a gradual, thoughtful development of each corner, prioritizing features that enhance their collective quality of life rather than settling for a pre-finished dwelling. This organic evolution underscores their philosophy that a home's beauty is intrinsically linked to embracing its evolving character and minor flaws.
Fluid Living Spaces
Designed with a profound emphasis on fostering connection and effortless interaction, the Alaghs' drawing room eschews rigid, formal layouts in favour of flexible seating arrangements. This open-ended design encourages spontaneous conversations and allows group dynamics to evolve naturally during gatherings. Ghazal notes that this space has been the backdrop for numerous joyous occasions, filled with laughter and shared stories among friends and family. She believes that such an environment is conducive to open dialogue, even on sensitive topics, helping individuals connect more deeply with loved ones. The house further embodies this principle through its deliberate reduction of internal walls, promoting an airy, adaptable atmosphere. This architectural choice is also highly practical, catering to the energetic lifestyle of their two sons and their beloved beagle. Varun explains that the expansive, unobstructed spaces allow the children to play freely, particularly their passion for football, ensuring they can indulge their interests without the risk of damaging delicate furnishings or decor. This thoughtful design ensures the home accommodates the active needs of its youngest residents.
Nature's Palette
The interior design palette of the Alagh residence is deeply rooted in earthy tones, prominently featuring shades of beige and green, colours that hold significant personal resonance for the couple. Green, in particular, is a recurring motif, appearing consistently across their brand's identity, from their company logo to various elements within their home, such as the dining table. This deliberate use of green throughout the house creates an atmosphere of tranquility and subtly reinforces their brand ethos. Beyond the colour scheme, the decor is enriched with mementos collected from their extensive travels. An interesting observation is the frequent appearance of paired decorative items, a pattern the couple did not intentionally cultivate but now view as a symbolic representation of their journey together, building a life side-by-side. These collected treasures and the natural colour palette imbue the home with a sense of personal history and serene beauty, mirroring the founders' connection to nature and each other.
Family's Epicenter
The heart of the Alaghs' home truly beats in the combined family room and dining area, spaces designed for ultimate relaxation and daily life unfolding organically. This area serves as the primary hub for informal family meals and candid conversations, fostering a strong sense of familial connection. Board games, such as chess and tic-tac-toe, are a constant presence, inviting spontaneous moments of play and friendly competition. Ghazal describes this area as the space where they connect with their children, share the day's experiences, and find joy in shared activities. Unlike more formal dining settings, this zone is deliberately casual, allowing the family to unwind without the pressure of maintaining a perfect facade. It’s a place where genuine family moments are created and cherished, embodying the essence of a lived-in, loved home.
Artistic Expression
Art plays a pivotal role in defining the Alaghs' home, with Ghazal Alagh's own captivating paintings adorning the walls. These artworks contribute vibrant splashes of colour and imbue the interiors with symbolic depth. Ghazal, who once pursued painting with serious dedication, including studies at the prestigious New York Academy of Art, infuses her work with themes of strength, prosperity, and positive energy. She describes her art as an expression of life's dynamism, variety, and inherent resilience. Many pieces feature paired figures or animals, such as birds and horses, which she interprets as symbols of love, fortitude, and vitality within the household. Although her current business commitments limit her painting time, these artworks remain a cherished reminder of her artistic spirit and its contribution to the home's overall aesthetic and emotional landscape.
Personal Archives
A particularly favoured spot for Varun Alagh is the home bar, a space designed for relaxed socializing with friends. This area doubles as a personal repository of travel memories, meticulously curated through a collection of shot glasses acquired from every city he has visited, transforming a simple shelf into a global chronicle. This ritual of collecting a glass from each new destination, a practice that began long before his marriage, has resulted in a collection exceeding 50 unique items, each representing a distinct journey. Equally significant is the adjacent study and library, housing a substantial portion of Varun's extensive book collection. Remarkably, his serious engagement with reading commenced relatively late, at the age of 22, since which he estimates having consumed around 4,000 books, highlighting a profound intellectual curiosity.
Milestone Display
Within the study, a specially designated 'Wall of Pride' serves as a powerful visual reminder of the couple's entrepreneurial journey. This dedicated space showcases key achievements and significant milestones from their careers, offering a constant affirmation of their progress and hard work. Ghazal clarifies that this wall is not intended for external admiration but serves as a personal touchstone for the couple themselves. It's a curated display designed to reflect on their accomplishments, reinforcing the 'why' behind their dedication and the sheer effort invested in their ventures. This introspective feature underscores their appreciation for their journey and serves as a source of motivation and quiet pride.
Aravalli Vista
Despite its modest size, the balcony is one of the most cherished and tranquil spaces within the Alagh residence. Adorned with an abundance of plants and vibrant cushions, it offers an unobstructed panoramic view of the Aravalli hills, providing a serene setting for the couple to commence their mornings with a cup of coffee. Varun reflects that this balcony has been a silent witness to a multitude of emotions and critical conversations over the years, serving as a space for discussing everything from professional stresses and challenges to moments of gratitude and celebration. He finds that the expansive greenery and the vast horizon visible from this spot serve as a constant, grounding reminder that life's complexities are often dwarfed by the larger perspective of existence, offering solace and clarity.
