What is the story about?
Prabhas - one of Indian cinema’s biggest pan-India stars – celebrates his birthday today, October 23. Known for his larger-than-life screen presence, action-packed
performances and films that have reached audiences far beyond Telugu cinema, the Baahubali franchise transformed him into a nationwide phenomenon. The actor’s popular title, ‘Rebel Star’, however, has roots in his Telugu film career and the kind of characters he has portrayed over the years. Unlike a title that emerges from a single blockbuster, Prabhas’ association with the name reflects his evolution as an action hero, his choice of intense roles and his connection with fans who admire his fearless on-screen persona. It also has roots linked to his family.
The Legacy Of Krishnam Raju
The story behind Prabhas’ title begins with his uncle, the late veteran Telugu actor Uppalapati Krishnam Raju, who was popularly known as ‘Rebel Star’. Krishnam Raju earned the moniker through his distinctive screen persona and roles that challenged conventions, establishing a strong identity in Telugu cinema. Prabhas eventually inherited the title, becoming known as ‘Young Rebel Star’ before the prefix ‘Young’ gradually faded from popular usage.
The connection between the two actors was also reflected on screen. They appeared together in the 2012 film Rebel, in which Krishnam Raju played Prabhas’ father. Interestingly, Prabhas revealed in an interview that the film’s title was suggested by directors Dasarath and V. V. Vinayak, and he felt it suited the project.
How Prabhas Built His Own Rebel Image
Prabhas made his acting debut with Eeswar in 2002, but it was Varsham (2004) that brought him wider recognition. He subsequently strengthened his standing as a mass-action hero with films such as Chatrapathi, Billa and Mirchi. These projects showcased his ability to portray determined, intense characters while commanding attention through action sequences and emotional performances.
However, his filmography was not limited to action entertainers. Movies such as Darling and Mr. Perfect allowed him to explore romantic and family-oriented roles, demonstrating a softer side that contrasted with his rugged screen image.
In a revealing interview around the release of Mirchi, Prabhas admitted that he was not particularly comfortable with grand titles. He said he would prefer to be known simply as Prabhas and had even tried to convince his friends to drop ‘Young Rebel Star’ from the film’s promotions. However, he ultimately accepted the title because his fans loved it.
From Telugu Star To Pan-India Phenomenon
While the ‘Rebel Star’ identity was established before his biggest commercial success, Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017) took Prabhas’ popularity to unprecedented heights. His portrayal of Amarendra Baahubali and Mahendra Baahubali introduced him to audiences across India and internationally. Subsequent films, including Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire and Kalki 2898 AD, further reinforced his position as a star capable of leading ambitious, large-scale productions.
Prabhas himself offered a simple explanation for the enduring title during a conversation with Shruti Haasan: he inherited it from his uncle, Krishnam Raju.
