Tom Holland is not done playing Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Infact, weeks before the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, fresh reports
have surfaced that Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures could already be looking past the latest movie in the franchise. This adds another name to Holland's filmography, who has played one of the most successful character arcs in the MCU ever since his debut as Peter Parker aka Spider-Man a decade ago, in Captain America: Civil War (2016). He is currently gearing up to reprise his superhero in Brand New Day, also starring his co-star-turned-now wife Zendaya. As fans await the fourth solo Spider-Man movie, there are rumours that a fifth film featuring Peter Parker is already in the works. The speculation comes from Marvel insider Alex Perez of The Cosmic Circus, who has reportedly teased that Brand New Day could be the beginning of a new Spider-Man trilogy. If the reports are to be believed, Marvel seems to be working on a second trilogy for Holland's take on the character, which could very well be the last chapter of his Spider-Man saga rather than an immediate ending.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day could begin new era
Tom Holland first played Peter Parker in the MCU in Captain America: Civil War, where Spider-Man was introduced as a young hero brought into the conflict between the Avengers. Soon he was a hit and got his own trilogy - Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home and No Way Home.
Peter Parker found himself in a whole new place after the emotional finale of No Way Home. His world was taken from him, his identity, including his friends and family, and he had to rebuild his life without the support system that he once had.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day will focus on this new chapter in Peter's life, with a more solitary approach to the hero. The plot has created buzz among fans as it veers away from the multiverse-heavy approach of recent Marvel projects and brings Spider-Man back to a more personal, street-level story.
Possible villains for Spider-Man's next chapter
There are rumours that Marvel's second trilogy will have a darker story set in New York with bad guys connected to crime and the underground world of power. Names reportedly linked to the future films include Kingpin, Venom, Tombstone, Hammerhead and Prowler. The potential roster hints at Marvel choosing Peter Parker to take on more worldly threats, avoiding apocalyptic battles.
The speculated addition of Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin, is especially intriguing as the character has already marked himself as a major player in the MCU after Daredevil: Born Again. If Spider-Man goes up against Kingpin, it could lead to a gritty crime story.
There's a link to Venom that's waiting to be explored, too. At the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, a piece of the symbiote remained in the MCU, opening the possibility of introducing a new Venom storyline.
Tom Holland's future as Spider-Man
Tom Holland has previously spoken about wanting his Spider-Man journey to conclude meaningfully. He praised Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark legacy and said he'd love to have a similar impact, helping guide the next generation before eventually stepping away. This has led many fans to believe that Holland's Spider-Man era could be on the way to a planned end rather than continuing indefinitely.
Producer Amy Pascal had earlier stated that Brand New Day was planned as the start of another Spider-Man trilogy, bolstering the notion of additional films beyond the next one. Holland has also shared excitement about the film, calling it one of his most creatively satisfying experiences and praising director Destin Daniel Cretton's vision for the movie.
