What is the story about?
Christopher Nolan's latest mega project, The Odyssey, is now the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, dethroning Deadpool & Wolverine, and Ryan
Reynolds is handling the loss in true Deadpool fashion. The epic adventure film starring Matt Damon as Odysseus has reportedly passed the $1.34 billion mark worldwide, beating the $1.338 billion theatrical haul of Reynolds and Hugh Jackman's action-adventure Marvel superhero flick. The milestone makes The Odyssey the latest blockbuster to break the R-rated box office record. The Odyssey also stars Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Zendaya, Samantha Morton, and many more.
The Odyssey surpassed Deadpool & Wolverine
The record was previously held by Deadpool & Wolverine, which was released in 2024 and had a blockbuster theatrical run. The Marvel movie, according to box-office reports, earned about $636.7 million domestically and $701.3 million overseas.
The Odyssey is meanwhile having a strong theatrical run too, and has now overtaken Deadpool 3. The movie has reportedly grossed a massive total, with overseas markets making up a big chunk of its earnings. The achievement makes The Odyssey the biggest film of Christopher Nolan's career, surpassing the director's previous box-office records.
70MM IMAX screenings are said to continue through September 16, which could extend the film's lead further.
Ryan Reynolds congratulates Christopher Nolan
Ryan Reynolds appeared to take the development in good humour, despite losing the record. On August 20, the Deadpool star shared a funny video on social media to celebrate The Odyssey's achievement. The clip cleverly mashes up scenes from both films, connecting Nolan's ancient Greek epic with one of the most memorable sequences from Deadpool & Wolverine.
In the Marvel movie, Deadpool and Wolverine famously brawl inside a Honda Odyssey minivan. Reynolds' new video alternates that mad battle with footage of Damon's Odysseus quietly travelling through a forest with his men.
Reynolds wrote in the post congratulating Nolan and the entire cast and crew of The Odyssey, "That is one helluva car," with a tongue-in-cheek nod to the Honda minivan.
The Odyssey is Christopher Nolan's biggest movie
The new box-office milestone is another major achievement for Nolan, whose filmography includes The Dark Knight, Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk and Oppenheimer. His biggest commercial success to date, The Odyssey, is one of the year's biggest theatrical releases too. It currently trails Spider-Man: Brand New Day at the worldwide box office, with the Marvel film said to have crossed the $2 billion mark.
The Odyssey's success also adds to a strong year for Hollywood blockbusters, with big releases such as Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday set to further stoke box-office competition later in the year.
