The year 2026 could very well be remembered as the year of Tom Tom Holland. The actor was not only part of two of the biggest films of the year - Christopher
Nolan's The Odyssey and the MCU extravaganza Spider-Man: Brand New Day, he officially entered Hollywood’s most exclusive financial club as well. The Spider-Man: Brand New Day star is expected to earn at least $100 million from the Sony and Marvel blockbuster, with his final compensation potentially going even higher. Crucially, however, the figure is not his upfront salary. Tom Holland reportedly received a base pay of at least $20 million, while the rest comes from an uncapped backend deal tied to the movie’s extraordinary box-office performance. That distinction is important. A $100 million total payday does not automatically make Tom Holland the highest-paid actor in Hollywood history. In fact, the last five years have produced several enormous actor paydays, with stars increasingly negotiating profit participation, producing fees and streaming guarantees rather than relying solely on traditional salaries.
Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Payday Has Come A Long Way
Tom Holland reportedly received around $250,000 for Captain America: Civil War in 2016 and approximately $500,000 for Spider-Man: Homecoming. His salary subsequently rose to around $4 million for Far From Home and $10 million for No Way Home. For Brand New Day, his guaranteed salary reportedly jumped to at least $20 million. The reported $100 million-plus potential compensation therefore represents a remarkable escalation. It also demonstrates how valuable Tom Holland has become to the Spider-Man franchise.
But while Tom Holland is entering nine-figure territory, he isn't operating in an entirely new financial universe.
Tom Cruise Still Sets The Benchmark
One of the clearest comparisons is Tom Cruise. Cruise has repeatedly negotiated extraordinary backend arrangements, most famously for Top Gun: Maverick. His earnings from the 2022 blockbuster have been widely reported at around or above $100 million, thanks largely to his participation in the film's box-office success. Cruise's 2025 earnings also demonstrate how powerful such arrangements remain. Forbes esated that he earned $46 million during the year, including his compensation from Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. His deal included first-dollar gross participation, an exceptionally valuable arrangement for a major star.
The difference is that Cruise has spent decades establishing himself as a bankable theatrical star. Tom Holland, meanwhile, is only 30 and has built much of his negotiating power around one of the world's biggest superhero franchises.
Robert Downey Jr Already Proved The Marvel Model
Robert Downey Jr may be the most interesting comparison. Downey's Marvel journey began with a comparatively modest Iron Man salary before his importance to the MCU transformed his bargaining position. By the e of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, his combination of salary and backend participation reportedly pushed his compensation into the $75 million-plus range for individual films.
His reported earnings from Spider-Man: Homecoming were also remarkable considering his limited screen e. In many ways, Tom Holland is following the same Marvel blueprint: prove that audiences will pay to see the character, become indispensable to the franchise and then negotiate a much larger share of the money generated by that success.
What Other Major Stars Have Earned In The Last Five Years
Tom Holland's reported payday becomes even more interesting when placed alongside what other Hollywood stars have commanded recently. Dwayne Johnson has arguably been the biggest annual Hollywood earner of the period. Forbes esated that Johnson earned $88 million in 2024, putting him at the top of its highest-paid actors list. His compensation included his work on Red One, as well as other producing and entertainment arrangements.
Ryan Reynolds has also become one of Hollywood's most commercially powerful actors, combining acting fees with producing and backend arrangements. His Deadpool & Wolverine era further strengthened his position as a star capable of commanding premium compensation. Hugh Jackman earned an esated $50 million in 2024, largely driven by Deadpool & Wolverine. Forbes attributed much of the enormous payday to his return as Wolverine after previously saying goodbye to the character in Logan.
Margot Robbie demonstrated that actors can dramatically increase their earnings by becoming producers and taking ownership stakes in projects. Her compensation for Barbie has been reported at approximately $50 million, combining her acting and producing income. Brad Pitt has similarly benefited from backend participation. Forbes esated his 2025 earnings at $41 million, with his compensation from F1 boosted by participation in the movie's theatrical revenues.
Scarlett Johansson earned an estimated $43 million in 2025, helped by her $20 million upfront fee and substantial profit participation for Jurassic World: Rebirth. Meanwhile, Mark Wahlberg earned an esated $44 million in 2025, including approximately $25 million for Play Dirty, while Denzel Washington earned around $38 million, with a reported $35 million fee-plus-buyout for Highest 2 Lowest.
And then there is Adam Sandler, who topped Forbes' 2025 list with $48 million after representation fees, or approximately $60 million before those fees. His Netflix arrangement continues to make him one of the industry's most consistently compensated stars.
Is Tom Holland Hollywood's Highest-Paid Star?
The $100 million figure attached to Spider-Man: Brand New Day is extraordinary, but it needs to be understood as potential total compensation rather than a $100 million upfront cheque. Hollywood's biggest paydays have often been created by exactly this kind of arrangement. Bruce Willis' The Sixth Sense compensation has famously been reported at around $120 million, while Cruise's Top Gun: Maverick deal has been esated at more than $100 million.
What makes Tom Holland's deal significant is not necessarily that it breaks every Hollywood record. It is that a 30-year-old actor who began Spider-Man with a reported six-figure salary is now commanding compensation structures associated with the industry's biggest veterans.
Tom Holland may not yet be Hollywood's highest-paid star. But if Brand New Day continues to generate enormous box-office returns, his backend deal could make him one of the most financially powerful actors of his generation.
