What is the story about?
Twenty-five years ago, a film about a group of ordinary Indian villagers who dared to challenge British rulers in a cricket match left the entire country
spellbound. That film was Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India. Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and produced by Aamir Khan, it went on to win eight National Awards, compete at the Oscars, and cement itself as one of the greatest films ever made in India. Now, a quarter century later, this landmark cinematic achievement is coming back to the big screen, and audiences couldn't be more excited.
Lagaan Re-Release Schedule
The much-awaited re-release of Lagaan is confirmed for June 12, 13, and 14, 2026, a special three-day theatrical event marking the film's 25th anniversary. A brand new trailer has already been dropped, flooding fans with nostalgia and reminding everyone just how powerful this film truly is.
The trailer takes viewers back to the dusty fields of 1893 Central India. To the brave villagers, the British officers, the unforgettable music, and that iconic cricket match. It has sent excitement soaring for everyone who loved the film and for a younger generation discovering it fresh.
As part of the celebrations, Aamir Khan Productions has also launched a creative campaign called #LagaanPosterChallenge, inviting fans to recreate the film's iconic poster in their own style. Winners of the contest will receive an invitation to attend a special screening alongside the original cast and crew.
Lagaan boasts a remarkable ensemble cast led by Aamir Khan in the role of Bhuvan. Alongside him, Gracy Singh plays Gauri, his love interest, while British actors Rachel Shelley and Paul Blackthorne play the colonial antagonists. The supporting cast features seasoned actors like Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Suhasini Mulay, Rajendra Gupta, and AK Hangal. Fan favourites Raghubir Yadav and Rajesh Vivek are also there, while Pradeep Rawat, Akhilendra Mishra, Yashpal Sharma, Daya Shankar Pandey, Shrivallabh Vyas, Raj Zutshi, Amin Hajee, Aditya Lakhia, and Javed Khan rounded out the village cricket team.
Lagaan And Gadar Set To Mark 25 Years
The re-release carries extra significance because of its shared history with another blockbuster. Lagaan was originally released in theatres on June 15, 2001, on the very same day as Sunny Deol's Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. Both films went on to become massive historic hits.
Lagaan and Gadar now mark their 25th year together in 2026, making this anniversary even more special for Indian cinema fans.
Lagaan was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, only the third Indian film ever to receive that honour. It won eight awards at the 49th National Film Awards, including Best Popular Film.
