Robert Downey Jr was at D23 in Anaheim, California, to promoteAvengers: Doomsday when he was asked to pick between his two Marvel characters. The actor named Doctor Doom as his current favourite. Talking about his decision, Robert Downey Jr called the experience of playing Doom as very different from his years as Tony Stark. “It was really weird being the guy — everyone else is hanging out, they’re the good heroes, and I’m (in) this mask and this hood,” he said.The actor said that playing the villain allowed him to observe his co-stars from a completely different perspective. He particularly spoke about his time working with Hayley Atwell and reconnecting with Chris Evans, with whom he shares a long history in the MCU.
Robert Downey Jr also said that the relationships developed during Doomsday were “so exciting and unexpected and beautiful”. He concluded, “I will say Doom, for now,” saying that the new role allowed him to notice what he had been missing while playing the hero.
How Doctor Doom Differs From Tony Stark
Robert Downey Jr has previously spoken about the contrast between Tony Stark and Doctor Doom. While Tony's trauma ultimately helped shape him into a hero, Doom comes from a different place, making the new character an intriguing challenge for the actor. The shift has also changed Robert Downey Jr’s dynamic with the rest of the cast. While he once stood alongside Marvel’s heroes, he now finds himself portraying their adversary.
Avengers: Doomsday is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and will feature an ensemble cast of returning MCU stars and new additions. The film is scheduled to release in the US on December 18, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars following on December 17, 2027.
