What is the story about?
Seven years after Avengers: Endgame cemented itself as one of the biggest cinematic events in Marvel history, the film is returning to theatres as Avengers: Endgame Encore.
For fans who watched the Infinity Saga finale in 2019, the return to the theatre offers nostalgia, familiar emotional beats, and some new material. The re-release is out in India on September 25 in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, with an exclusive look at Avengers: Doomsday. Before we dive back into the battle with Thanos, here are five things we need to remember about the story, characters and new Encore experience.
1. The Avengers after Infinity War
The emotional genesis of Endgame is the crushing conclusion of Avengers: Infinity War. Thanos managed to get all six Infinity Stones and used the Infinity Gauntlet to wipe out half of all life in the universe. Some of those who disappeared in the 'BLIP' were Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Bucky Barnes, Wanda Maximoff, Sam Wilson and some of the Guardians of the Galaxy. The rest of the Avengers were left to deal with their defeat, grief and the fallout of failing to stop Thanos.
That loss propels the opening stretch of Endgame. Tony Stark is lost in space, Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff try to hold onto what's left of the team, Thor battles his own failure, and Clint Barton has gone very dark.
2. Time heist changes everything
One of the biggest turning points is when the Avengers understand that beating Thanos in the present might not be enough. Their solution is to travel back in time and send different members of the team to retrieve the Infinity Stones. The mission revisits several key moments from previous MCU movies like The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World and Guardians of the Galaxy. And it's not just fan service either, as bits from those previous movies are part of the final battle.
Time travel rules are very important as well. The film makes the point that the past doesn't simply disappear when it's altered. Rather, the Avengers' actions have created convoluted ripple effects that end up mattering for the larger MCU.
3. Original Avengers' emotional journeys
Thanos is the big bad, but Endgame is just as much about the personal journeys of the original Avengers coming to a close. Tony Stark is not the selfish billionaire we met in Iron Man anymore, but a man who has made a family with Pepper Potts and daughter Morgan. Steve Rogers faces what he's willing to give up, while Natasha is determined to get back the people who disappeared in the Snap. Meanwhile, Thor is dealing with guilt and failure. Clint's story is one of his family's disappearance and his attempt to find his way back from the man he has become.
These personal arcs make the climactic battle even more weighty, especially for those who come back to the film after a few years.
4. The Infinity Stones still matter
The stakes at hand still revolve around the six Infinity Stones: Space, Mind, Reality, Power, Time and Soul. By the time of Endgame, Thanos has used them to achieve his goal, while the Avengers need them to reverse the Snap. So the time heist is a race to get the Stones back from different points in history.
If you've forgotten just how important the individual Stones are, a quick MCU refresher can make the rewatch easier. They have a history that runs through several movies and characters, from the Tesseract to the Mind Stone, to Doctor Strange's Time Stone and the mysterious Soul Stone.
5. Encore is not a nostalgia re-release
That's maybe the biggest reason for fans to pay attention this time. Avengers: Endgame Encore is being marketed as more than a simple re-release of the 2019 blockbuster. The new theatrical cut features new footage and an exclusive first look at Marvel's next big movie, Avengers: Doomsday, arriving on December 18, 2026.
Encore's new footage leads up to Doomsday
The amount of new material also varies by format. According to reports, standard screenings receive under two minutes of extra footage, while IMAX and Infinity Vision showings have more, including the special Doomsday look, with close to 3-4 minutes of new visuals. That makes the choice of format particularly relevant for fans who have seen Endgame multiple times.
The Russo brothers have also described the re-release as an important part of the preparation for Avengers: Doomsday, with Joe Russo saying it is "required viewing." So while the Endgame story may be familiar, the Encore edition is intended to make the next Avengers chapter connect to Marvel's Infinity Saga finale.
