Rani Mukerji is mourning the loss of her mother, Krishna Mukerji. She breathed her last on September 22. The Mukerji matriarch was 75 years old. Krishna was cremated
at Mumbai’s Vile Parle Crematorium with family members and Bollywood celebrities offering their last tributes. The family has not disclosed the cause of her death. Krishna was married to filmmaker Ram Mukerjee, co-founder of Filmalaya Studios, who died in 2017. The couple had two children, Rani Mukerji and film producer Raja Mukerji.

Rani and the Mukerji-Chopra family arrived at the crematorium in the afternoon. The actress’ best friend and colleague Shah Rukh Khan offered his condolences to the bereaved family. He has been close to the Mukerji and Chopra families. Her mentor and best friend, filmmaker Karan Johar, arrived sometime later with Anil Kapoor. Alia Bhatt was at the funeral. Ayan Mukerji, who is Rani’s cousin, paid his last respects to his aunt.

Rani and the Mukerji family issued an official statement that read, "With heavy hearts, we share that Rani Mukerji's mother, Mrs Krishna Mukerji, 75, passed away this afternoon. The family is deeply grateful for your love, prayers, and support, and respectfully requests privacy during this time of immense grief."
Who was Krishna Mukerji?
Workwise, Krishna Mukerji had been associated with the Bengali film industry as a playback singer. Her credited work includes the song Idd Ke Din Gale Mil Le Raja in Teesri Aankh, which was released in 1982.
Her last public appearance was in 2025. She visited a Durga Puja pandal and spoke about Rani’s National Award win. She told reporters, “I am happy that she got a National Award. But (she got it) very late. She should (have gotten the award) for the film Black, I think so. But today, I am very proud of her." She added, “30 years of her career, and she got it now. But I am happy."

Rani’s father Ram belonged to the family of Sashadhar Mukherjee's elder brother, Ravindramohan Mukherjee. He was his younger son. Kajol, Tanishaa Mukerji, Sarbani Mukerji and Ayan Mukerji are Rani’s cousins. After Ayan’s father, Deb Mukerji, passed away, the next generation of the Mukerji family took over the annual tradition of Durga Puja celebration, but on a smaller scale. Rani and her mother would attend it each year.
