What is the story about?
Vijay'sJana Nayagan is in huge trouble. The makers of Jana Nayagan, starring actor-politician Thalapathy Vijay, suffered a major setback on Wednesday as
the Supreme Court dismissed their plea seeking immediate clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The petition was filed by producer KVN Productions LLP after the Madras High Court division bench stayed an earlier single bench order directing the CBFC to certify the film without delay.
Jana Nayagan makers' petition dismissed by SC
A bench comprising Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Augustine George Masih declined to entertain the plea, noting that the matter is already scheduled for hearing before the Madras High Court division bench on January 20. The apex court observed that it would not intervene at this stage while the issue is pending before the high court.
During the hearing, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing on behalf of KVN Productions, argued that it is a long-established industry practice to announce release dates even before CBFC certification. He also pointed out that over 5,000 theatres had already been booked for the film’s release. Despite the submissions, the Supreme Court maintained that the producers must await the high court’s decision, dealing a temporary blow to the film’s release plans.
More about Jana Nayagan
Vijay's Jana Nayagan was originally slated for a January 9 theatrical release. However, the makers announced the postponement earlier this week, citing circumstances beyond their control. In an official statement, the team expressed regret over the delay and acknowledged the anticipation surrounding the film. They assured fans that a new release date would be announced at the earliest and requested continued patience and support.
KVN Productions moved the apex court against a January 9 order by HC that put on hold a Single Judge Bench directive asking for the immediate issuance of a UA certificate, effectively stalling the film’s planned Pongal release. However, with the SC refusing to entertain the makers and asking them to go back to Madras HC has put question marks on the film's release plans.
