Malayalam superstar Mohanlal’s mother,Santhakumari, passed away on December 30, 2025. The veteran actor’s mother was 90 years old. She breathed her last
at her residence in Elamakkara, Ernakulam. Several prominent figures in Indian cinema reached out to express condolences to Mohanlal and his family through social media platforms. Her loss leaves a void in Mohanlal's life, as he saw his mom as a source of inspiration. On several occasions, through public platforms and posts, he had spoken about the strong influence she had on both his cinematic journey and personal life. In an early interview, Mohanlal spoke about his mother and how she helped his father battle an illness.

In an interview with Manorama, Mohanlal revealed that his father suffered from a memory loss. Despite his illness, his mother Santhakumari cared for his deeply. He said that his mother held his father's hand throughout. He went on to call his mother a selfless person, who cared about his father's life. "Normally, people are not even ready to take their relatives suffering from memory loss outside their home. But my mother ensured that my father did not miss out any function because of his illness and took him to all festive occasions. She patiently told him the same things over and over again. She even fed him like a child".
He went on to speak about the time his parents watched a film of his in the theatre and how his mother explained little nuances even though he was unsure if his father recognised him on screen. "Once, both of us took my father to the theater to watch one of my movies. I don't even know if my father recognized me on screen. But I was overwhelmed to see my parents watching the movie – like their early courtship days. Holding on to her hand, my father listened earnestly as my mother explained even the little nuances of the movie. No doctor guided her on how to deal with disease-struck patients. So who taught my mother to attend to my father with such love and affection? No mother needs to be taught anything ... that's the spirit of motherhood."
Mohanlal is the youngest of Santhakumari and Viswanathan Nair’s two children. She lost her elder son, Pyarelal, in 2000.
