The makers of the much-awaited movie, backed by Aamir Khan Productions, dropped the film's first official trailer, and it is everything unlike what we've seen on the dark chapter of India's history during the Independence. Also starring Shabana Azmi, Preity Zinta, Ali Fazal, Karan Deol, and Abhimanyu Singh, the movie brings back Rajkumar Santoshi in the director's chair, marking the big reunion of Deol and Santoshi after several acclaimed collaborations, positioning it as one of the biggest Hindi releases of the year.
Batwara 1947 opens the Partition chapter with a rare light
The trailer of Batwara 1947 sets the tone for the movie. It follows the central character of Sunny Deol as Sikander Mirza, who, along with his wife, played by Zinta, crosses the border through the bloodshed of Partition and gets allotted a custodian house. As the family looks for a future in a new place, they encounter an old lady, played by Azmi, the house's original resident, who refuses to leave. As Deol accepts her as part of his family, celebrating both Eid and Diwali together, anti-communal elements strike his peaceful life when they demand that he throw Azmi out of the household and the neighbourhood. What follows is Deol's fight against all odds with his signature action, dialogues, and histrionics to safeguard Azmi and keep her close, imparting a lesson of brotherhood that humanity is above any religion.
Batwara 1947's title change
Batwara 1947 was originally announced as Lahore 1947 until the film was renamed. According to the makers, they chose to retitle it as it better reflected the story's focus on Partition and its emotional consequences. The title change also came amid reports that it would help avoid unnecessary political controversy.
Asghar Wajahat's play inspired the film
As per the official synopsis, Batwara 1947 is set against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition of India, and tells a story of survival, displacement and humanity during one of the most turbulent chapters in the subcontinent's history. The story is reportedly inspired by celebrated playwright Asghar Wajahat's acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya O Jamya E Nai, which explores communal harmony, identity and compassion amid the violence of Partition.
Batwara 1947 is scheduled to release in theatres on August 14, 2026, coinciding with India's Independence Day weekend.
