over announcing Jana Nayagan release date without receiving a censor certificate from the Central Board Of Film Certification (CBFC), their lawyer Satish Parasaran responded by saying that this a common practice in the film industry. Giving the example of Ranveer Singh's Dhurandhar 2, the senior advocate added that even the Aditya Dhar directorial announced its release date before securing a censor certificate.
What Did Jana Nayagan Team's Lawyer Tell High Court
Addressing the Madras High Court's concern, KVN Productions' senior counsel stated that announcing a film's release date before receiving a censor certificate is not unusual. He explained that producers across industries often fix and publicise release dates while the certification process is still in progress.
To support his argument, Parasaran cited Dhurandhar 2, pointing out that the sequel has already locked a March 19 release despite not having its CBFC clearance at the time of announcement.
He added that films, especially big-ticket projects, operate on tight schedules involving distributors, exhibitors, and promotional commitments. According to him, expecting producers to hold back release plans until certification is completed would disrupt the entire release pipeline and marketing strategy.
How Censor Dispute Around Jana Nayagan Escalated
The issue traces back to Jana Nayagan being announced as a Pongal release on January 9. Directed by H Vinoth, the film is significant as it marks Thalapathy Vijay’s final movie before his complete political entry. However, just days before release, the CBFC informed the makers that the chairman had chosen to send the film to a revising committee, delaying certification.
This prompted KVN Productions to approach the Madras High Court. Initially, Justice PT Asha directed the CBFC to issue a U/A 16+ certificate immediately. Soon after, the order was stayed by a division bench following an urgent mention by the CBFC, leading to further hearings.
The makers then knocked on the Supreme Court's doors, but the top court asked the High Court to resolve the matter quickly. After detailed arguments, the Madras High Court has now reserved its order, leaving the films release timeline uncertain.
Also starring Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, and Narain, Jana Nayagan continues to await final clarity on its censor status.
