Avengers: Doomsday will see heroes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the X-Men universe, and the Fantastic Four franchise uniting to face one of the most
powerful villains ever introduced in the MCU. But despite the massive crossover, one pairing fans may have been hoping for will never happen, at least in this chapter. Tenoch Huerta, who returns as Namor after Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, has revealed that his character doesn't feature in a single scene alongside Robert Downey Jr's Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. The revelation is the clearest sign yet of Namor's role in Marvel's next blockbuster while also providing new context for Doctor Doom's impact on the larger MCU.
Namor and Doctor Doom never meet in person on screen
Speaking about returning as Namor, Huerta confirmed to Collider that Doctor Doom is behind a lot of the problems in Avengers: Doomsday, but the ruler of Talokan never meets him. Instead, Namor is feeling the effects of Doom from a distance.
Doom's emotional turmoil is so destructive that it affects everyone in the Marvel universe, even those who never meet him face-to-face, says Huerta. Instead of making a personal rivalry between Namor and Doom, the movie turns the villain into a global, or even multiversal, threat whose actions impact the lives of heroes in various worlds.
Doctor Doom's humanity is still relevant
Huerta also pointed out that Doctor Doom isn't your average supervillain. "Well, he's that powerful that the MCU has to have every hero in different worlds - Fantastic Four, X-Men, Avengers - together to defeat him. That is the power of Doctor Doom. And why he's so evil is because he's hurt."
Huerta added, "Something, a tragedy, happened in his life, and this is the way he found to heal in a weird way. But it's part of the humanity in him. And of course, you have that actor, that badass actor, playing Doom," the actor said, praising RDJ for his acting. He called Robert Downey Jr. one of the best actors he has ever seen, and he is so excited to be part of the same film.
Why Doomsday needs every Marvel hero assembling
Huerta believes the reason Avengers: Doomsday brings together heroes from almost every corner of the Marvel cinematic universe is because of the threat level of Doom. Instead of focusing on one team, the movie brings together the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men and other heroes because, realistically, one team alone couldn't handle Doom.
The crossover will feature one of the franchise's biggest casts, Marvel announced, making it one of the studio’s most ambitious projects since Avengers: Endgame.
On the Russo brothers
The actor also praised directors Anthony and Joe Russo, describing them as collaborative filmmakers who are open to creative input from their cast. "You have these two directors [Anthony and Joe Russo], they are so cool. They are smart and intelligent and sensitive, and they are totally open. As an actor, when you suggest something, they are open, they listen to you, and then it's there."
Filming for Secret Wars hasn't started
Huerta confirmed that the screenplay for Avengers: Secret Wars is still being finished, so production has not started yet. "As soon as they have the script… Well, as far as I know. But I hope soon," he said.
While it's easy to be alarmed at this stage that there's no completed Secret Wars script yet, it's not uncommon for Marvel to begin shooting movies and flesh out the script as production moves along. His comments come after Anthony and Joe Russo said last month that filming on Secret Wars should begin soon, though the script is still being written.
