What is the story about?
Salman Khan’s legal battle over the proposed film Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy has taken another turn. The Delhi High Court on Tuesday, October 6,
sought the actor's response to an application filed by producer Amit Jani, who has requested that proceedings in Khan’s suit against the film be stayed. The producer has argued that the dispute is substantially similar to an earlier personality rights case filed by the actor and that allowing both matters to continue would result in parallel litigation.
Delhi HC Seeks Salman Khan's Response
Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani issued notice to Salman Khan on the producer's application. During the hearing, the filmmaker's counsel argued that similar relief had already been sought in an earlier matter pending before the Delhi High Court.
The producer's side has contended that Salman's current proceedings concern the same proposed film, its promotional material and alleged infringement of his personality or publicity rights. The plea therefore seeks a stay on the later proceedings until the earlier case is decided.
Salman Khan's lawyer, Senior Advocate Ravi Prakash, told the court that he would file a reply to the application. The court also sought clarification about the nature of the original suit and whether it concerned the actor’s personality rights.
What Is The Kala Hiran Legal Dispute?
The legal dispute centres on Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy, a proposed film that has been linked to the 1998 blackbuck case involving Salman Khan. The actor has objected to the film and its promotional material, claiming that certain elements make him identifiable and allegedly use aspects of his persona without his permission.
Salman had earlier approached the Delhi High Court seeking protection of his personality rights. The court had granted an ex parte ad interim injunction in his favour on December 11, 2025. The actor later moved another application seeking specific interim relief against the proposed film.
In July, the Delhi High Court also directed online platforms to remove the film's teaser and related promotional material after Khan raised objections. The court’s interim directions restricted the filmmakers from uploading, hosting, sharing, promoting or disseminating the material across different platforms.
The makers, however, have maintained that Kala Hiran is not a biopic on Salman Khan. They have argued that the film deals with publicly known events surrounding the blackbuck case and that the actor cannot claim exclusive rights over those events.
The Delhi High Court has now given Salman Khan's legal team time to file its response to the producer’s application. The matter is listed for further hearing on December 16.
