Dhanush won his first National Award as a director with Raayan. Not just that, the actor’s Captain Miller got a Special Mention. The actor attended the ceremony
held in Kevadia, Gujarat. India’s President Droupadi Murmu presented awards to the recipients on stage. Dhanush received the certificate from President Murmu. His sons, Linga and Yatra, were at the ceremony.
Dhanush receives National Award
Dressed in traditional attire, Dhanush took the stage to receive his awards. Previously, he won the National Awards in the acting category in 2019 and 2021. This is his first certificate in the direction category.
Dhanush addresses National Award debate
After the National Awards were announced, a section of the audience did not agree with the jury’s choice. Arguing that there were better Tamil films, they felt Meiyazhagan and Maharaja should have won the honour instead. At an event on July 26, Dhanush addressed the debate over the National Film Award win.
At the event, Dhanush spoke about Raayan and the efforts he has put into making it a film that he is proud of. The actor further said that he gave the film his all. Dhanush urged his fans and people of Tamil Nadu to cheer for him, and instead of demotivating him, he appealed for their support and encouragement.
Further, Dhanush acknowledged that there were better films than Raayan that released in 2024. However, when he did movies like Pudhupettai, Vada Chennai, Karnan, Maryan, and Raanjhanaa, he missed the National Film Award. Despite that, the actor said only a few people stood up for him.
Dhanush on first direction award
Following the National Awards announcement, Dhanush’s statement read, “This is my third National Award as an actor and my first National Award as a director. None of this would have been possible without my fans, the pillars of my strength. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
He added, “A first is always unforgettable. Winning my very first National Award as a Director for Raayan is a blessing I will cherish forever. And as I always say, Ennam pol vaazhkkai. Har Har Mahadev.”
Raayan follows Kathavarayan aka Raayan, who is forced to take care of his two brothers and toddler sister after their parents vanish. When the siblings grow up, Muthu (Sundeep Kishan) is an alcoholic, hot-headed wastrel in the locality, Manickam (Kalidas Jayaram) is a college-going youngster, and Durga (Dushara Vijayan) is the darling of the house, with unconditional love for her brother. However, Muthu's alcoholic nature lands the family in trouble. The film is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
