Urmila Matondkar To Play Principal In Netflix Series
As per What's On Netflix, Urmila Matondkar is set to headline a new Netflix India series, marking another major acting project for the Bollywood star. The yet-untitled show is being produced by The Viral Fever (TVF), the production house behind popular series such as Kota Factory.
While the makers are keeping the plot under wraps, the series is reportedly set in and around the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Matondkar will essay the role of a principal. Details about the rest of the cast are yet to be announced.
The project is directed by Divyanshu Malhotra and written by Puneet Batra. The duo previously worked together on the coming-of-age drama Flames. The new series is currently in production and is reportedly targeting a mid-2027 premiere on Netflix.
Urmila Matondkar’s Acting Comeback
The Netflix series is one of several projects marking Urmila Matondkar’s return to scripted entertainment after a prolonged absence from prominent screen roles. The actress is also set to headline Tiwari, an upcoming revenge thriller series directed by Saurabh Varma. The 14-episode series features JD Chakravarthy, Gauahar Khan and Rajesh Sharma in key roles.
Tiwari follows a woman who spends 14 years in prison for a crime she did not commit. After her release, she sets out to uncover the truth and track down those responsible for framing her. The series is currently in post-production and is reportedly eyeing a February 2027 release on a major streaming platform.
Matondkar’s return is particularly notable given her legacy as one of the prominent actresses of the 1990s and 2000s. She is remembered for performances in films including Rangeela, Satya, Indian, Judaai and Ek Hasina Thi. Her last substantial lead role came in the 2014 Marathi film Ajoba. She later made a brief appearance in a song in Sanjay Dutt’s Blackmail in 2018 and also appeared on television as a judge on DID Super Moms Season 3.
