What is the story about?
Karan Johar is one of the finest filmmakers we have in Indian cinema. He started his career as an assistant director for the film, Dilwale Dulhania Le
Jayenge (1995). In his career, the director has seen a lot of ups and down, and two people who always stood by his side like strong pillar of supports, were his mentors, Shah Rukh Khan and Aditya Chopra. Today, on the occasion of Guru Purnima (July 29), Karan Johar paid tribute to them with a sweet caption, in which he recalled his life changing conversations with Aditya Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan, respectively.
Karan Johar’s Guru Purnima Special Post For SRK, Aditya Chopra
Aditya Chopra directed Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Karan Johar shared a couple throwback pictures in a collage on his Instagram handle. In the caption, Karan mentioned that he got a call from Aditya Chopra at 1 am. He asked him to assist him on DDLJ. At that time, KJo was about leave for his further studies. When Aditya Chopra asked Karan Johar to assist him, the filmmaker was apprehensive to do it, but the YRF producer managed to convince KJo.
“I was melodramatic and filmy and the only thing I needed was an interval because I was always on a treadmill ( not the ones gyms are famous for ) … he said if I didn’t pursue this path I would be making a huge mistake … I couldn’t sleep that night and then in my true filmy self… I went dramatically to my father the next morning and asked him for a year of my life…. A year on a film set …. He looked at my moist eyes ( looked like tears but was actually just lack of sleep and a developing stye) and said “beta … will you know what to do on a set ? “ …. I said an emphatic NO…. He asked … “ Will you promise to work very hard and follow every instruction ? “…. He said… “ that will make you a producer …. To be a director you need only and only Passion,” Karan Johar recalled emotional conversation with his father.
After some melodrama, Karan Johar eventually agreed to assist Aditya Chopra on DDLJ and the rest is history.
Karan Johar Showers Love On Shah Rukh Khan
Karan Johar also mentioned about the conversation he had with Shah Rukh Khan on a hill top of Switzerland while shooting for Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. At that time, SRK told Karan that he will act in his first film if he becomes the director.
Karan stated, “I thought to myself … he’s probably low on oxygen and may not completely know what he’s saying … But he was serious and followed up with my father as we got back to India … my father ( who was mildly hard of hearing ) wasn’t sure either …. But Srk was serious… he believed in me for a reason I can’t quite comprehend even today … ( just like Adi did ).” (sic)
While concluding his note, Karan Johar thanked Shah Rukh Khan and Aditya Chopra for shaping his career. He said that he is here with his strengths and flaws, ups and downs, wins and losses. He credited SRK and Adi for everything and mentioned that they both are the only reason because of which he can tell stories today. He wished ‘Happy Gurupurnima’ to all. “A big shout out to every guru who has paid it forward and created careers for others …selflessly…..” Karan concluded.
